Greenville Drive News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Charleston scored a much-needed victory Friday night, taking advantage of a key ninth inning Greenville error en route to a 6-5 win over the Bombers at Municipal Stadium. A four-run rally in the top of the ninth helped the RiverDogs break a three-game losing streak, and reduced their magic number to clinch the South Atlantic League first-half Southern Division title to one. At press time, Augusta and Savannah were tied 4-4 in the 12th inning. Should Augusta lose, Charleston would clinch the crown.
Trailing 5-2 entering the ninth, the RiverDogs opened the frame with five consecutive hits off Harvey Garcia (3-3). An Irwil Rojas RBI single cut the deficit to 5-3. Estee Harris followed with a base hit to load the bases, setting the table for Grant Plumley.
Plumley laced a low line drive through the middle for a single. Center fielder Brett LeVier charged the ball and overran it for a two-base error, allowing three runs to score, giving Charleston a 6-5 lead. Garcia, who allowed seven hits and five runs, three earned, over one inning, had yielded just one earned run over his previous 14 innings prior to Friday's meltdown.
From there, righthander Mike Martinez notched his league-leading 20th save by pitching a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning.
Greenville built an early lead against lefthander Phil Coke. Andrew Pinckney put the Bombers up in the fourth inning, hitting his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to deep right field. After Charleston plated a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 2-1, Greenville scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. A run-scoring double by Austin Easley highlighted the rally as the Bombers made it 4-1.
Bomber reliver Gary Galvez pitched five strong innings in a no decision. The righthander departed with a 4-1 lead after yeilding just one run while allowing two hits and punching out five batters.
Charleston righthander Mike Gardner (1-0) earned the win, working the bottom of the eighth allowing one unearned run.
The clubs meet in game three of the four-game series on Saturday at 7:05pm. Lefthander Adam Blackley (1-7) will pitch for Greenville against a RiverDogs pitcher to be announced.
