Columbus Catfish News Release

COLUMBUS, GA - Rome C Clint Sammons walked with the bases loaded in the ninth inning against Catfish reliever LHP Chad Bailey giving Rome a 3-2 victory over the Catfish at Golden Park. Despite the loss tonight, the Catfish have won two of the first three games of the series with the Braves and have a chance to win the series tomorrow in the final game of the first half of the South Atlantic League schedule. CF Jamie Hoffmann had three singles and reached in all four plate appearances tonight in a losing effort. The Catfish have a 28-40 record after 68 games while Rome improves to 38-29 with the victory.

Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Rome starter RHP James Parr on a sacrifice fly by 2B Travis Denker that scored Hoffmann from third. Rome scored on unearned run off RHP Zach Hammes in the third inning on a Sammons sacrifice fly and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when JC Holt grounded out, driving home a run. In the fifth inning, Catfish 1B Cole Bruce tied the game at two with a sacrifice fly to score RF Ryan Russ. The Catfish preserved the tie when LF Ryan Carter threw out a runner at the plate trying to score in the top of the sixth inning.

In the ninth inning, Bailey loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, and Rome took the lead without the benefit of a base hit when Sammons walked on a 3-1 count. The Fish could not rally against LHP Jonathan Venters, who earned the win in relief. Tomorrow the Fish wrap up a four-game series with Rome and finish the first half of play when they take on the Rome Braves at 2:00 PM at Golden Park. RHP Brandon Weeden (2-5, 4.89 ERA) is the scheduled starter for Columbus.
