San Diego Goes 1-2-0 Last Week; Nine Games to Catch Idaho and Fresno

San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ The San Diego Gulls have dominated their opponents on home ice this season, but last week they struggled at the newly named ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena, dropping two of three games. Because of that, they find themselves eight points out of a playoff spot now with only nine games to go.
San Diego began the week Friday by getting pummeled 8-1 by the Long Beach Ice Dogs. The Gulls had a much better effort Saturday against the Las Vegas Wranglers, but still came out on the short end. Sunday, however, the team regrouped and pulled out a tight victory over Vegas. So (as of Monday), San Diego sits eight points behind the Idaho Steelheads for the final playoff spot in the division and now trails the fifth-place Fresno Falcons by seven points.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
March 18 vs. Long Beach: Joe Cardarelli netted a hat trick and added two assists, while Christian Larrivee also earned five points with two goals and three assists, leading the Ice Dogs to an 8-1 thrashing over the Gulls. Long Beach jumped out to an early two-goal lead before San Diego got on the scoreboard late in the first period. But that was the lone Gulls highlight as the Ice Dogs dominated the rest of the way. It was only their second win in regulation against the Gulls in the last 29 head-to-head meetings.
March 19 vs. Las Vegas: The Gulls out-shot the Wranglers 43-21, but goaltender Marc Magliarditi stopped 41 shots, leading Las Vegas to a 4-2 victory. The Wranglers jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period, thanks to goals by Darren Lynch, Marco Peluso and Jason Bonsignore. Darren Clark and Sean O'Connor scored back-to-back goals for San Diego, but Deryk Engalland sealed Vegas' win with a goal late in the third period.
March 20 vs. Las Vegas: Las Vegas jumped out to a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the game, but the Gulls scored four straight â three of which came in the second period â to beat the Wranglers 4-3. Joel Stepp led the attack with two goals, while Brian Gornick tallied one goal and two assists. Vegas made it a one-goal game in the third period, but Eddy Ferhi and company made it stand up.
PLAYER NOTES: Prior to Friday night's loss against the Ice Dogs, Ferhi stopped 175 of his last 185 shots (.946 save percentage)... Max Birbraer and Sylvain Deschatelets lead the club with 44 points apiece... Rookie Guillaume Fournier is tops on the club with 10 power-play goals... Evgueni Nourislamov was activated from the injured list Friday after missing 23 games with a broken thumb... David Karpa was activated on Sunday after missing three games with a groin injury... Curtis Brown was placed on injured reserve Sunday with a sore groin... He joins Nick Ganga, who is still out with a knee injury...
TEAM NOTES: Of San Diego's remaining nine games, five are at home... The Gulls have four head-to-head games left against the Idaho Steelheads... Even with their loss Friday, the Blue and Orange are still 26-2-1 in their last 29 meetings with the Ice Dogs... San Diego is 20-8-3 at home and 12-17-3 on the road... The Gulls are 23-3-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 9-22-5 when scoring three or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponents six times since the all-star break (26 games)... They are 11-14-2 in their last 27 games... Since the all-star break the Gulls are 6-4-1 at home and 5-9-1 on the road (11-13-2 overall)...
UPCOMING GAMES: The Gulls close out their five-game homestand Friday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Gulls visor. San Diego will play in Long Beach Saturday at 7 p.m. before hosting the Gwinnett Gladiators Sunday, March 27 at 5:05 p.m. The first 5,000 kids 14 and under at Sunday's game will receive a special Gulls T-shirt.
