SAN ANTONIO ------ The San Antonio Rampage (33-28-10-0) landed two goals in the opening period, but ultimately fell to the Rockford IceHogs (38-25-4-4) 4-2 on Wednesday at the AT&T Center.
Rockford got out to an early lead at 4:21 of the opening period when Tanner Kero found a streaking Matthew Highmore in the slot for his 23rd goal of the season. San Antonio evened the game less than two minutes later when Rocco Grimaldi fired the puck in front of the net to the waiting stick of Michael Joly, who beat netminder Collin Delia at the 6:13 mark. Tommy Vannelli extended the Silver and Black's lead after the defenseman fired a wrister from the high slot at 8:21, marking his first AHL goal. Lance Bouma netted the equalizer at 17:11 after collecting a loose puck in front of the Rampage net and hitting a backhander past goaltender Spencer Martin.
The IceHogs regained the lead with a shorthanded goal at 3:08 of the middle frame when William Pelletier forced a turnover at mid-ice and beat Martin with a wrist shot from the left circle. The remainder of the period went scoreless as Rockford took a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission.
The IceHogs were able to hold San Antonio scoreless in the third period, including an extra attacker for the final 58 seconds of regulation, as Pelletier added an empty-net goal with 41 seconds remaining to secure a 4-2 Rockford victory.
