LAVAL - After coming home from a four-game road trip, the Laval Rocket fell to the Rochester Americans 3-2 at Place Bell on Wednesday night despite a hard-fought battle until the final buzzer.
A first period penalty against the visitors allowed for Adam Cracknell to score his 28th of the year by picking up a loose puck that Matt Taormina whipped at the boards from the blue line and batting it behind Rochester's Jonas Johansson halfway through the period, with the secondary assist coming from Chris Terry, who propelled himself back into a tie with Phil Varone of Lehigh Valley for the league's top scorer with the point. Newcomer Tye Felhaber almost squeaked one under Johansson's pad shortly after the Rocket goal, but it was the Americans who ended up getting the next goal after taking advantage of a three-on-one a few minutes later.
The second period saw Antoine Waked netting his 7th of the season with a slap shot to give Sylvain Lefebvre's troops their second lead of the night, on a play which gave Anthony Beauregard his first point in the AHL and Taormina his 14th multi-point game of the season, but it also saw Rochester tie things up with twenty seconds left. Then, thirty-six seconds into the third, Rochester claimed their first lead of the night on Colin Blackwell's second goal of the game.
"They always say that giving up goals in the last two minutes or the first two minutes of the period is tough," said third-star Charlie Lindgren after the game. "Unfortunately, tonight they got two of them, and it was the difference in the game."
The Rocket fired six shots of which many were quality chances on Johansson in the final frame in hopes of forcing overtime and an eventual victory, but his 30 save performance let Rochester hold on for the victory.
