San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Rampage center Jakub Koreis scored his first goal of the season to give the Rampage their first goal but wasn't enough to defeat the Grand Rapids Griffins, falling 5-2 at the SBC Center Saturday night. The North Division leading Griffins outshot San Antonio 44 to 26 and jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the game, enough to hand the Rampage their seventh consecutive loss (0-6-1-0).
Grand Rapids forward Donald McLean gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead in the opening period at the 7:46 mark and collected his 21st goal of the season.
A boarding penalty by David Cornacchia late in the first period gave Grand Rapids a pair of power-play goals within the first two minutes of the second frame. Cornacchia plowed Greg Amadio into the boards and was assessed a five-minute major.
Darryl Bootland helped start the second period quickly with a power-play goal 46 seconds into the period as his teammate Kent McDonell tallied another power-play goal 69 seconds later. Jiri Hudler extended the Griffins' lead to 4-0 with his 21st goal of the season at the 14:32 mark.
Koreis stopped Joey MacDonald's shutout bid with 2:26 left in the second with help from Eric Chouinard and Pascal Rheaume. Chouinard tallied his first point in his fifth game with the Rampage.
Pavel Brendl extended his point streak to three games (3-2-5) and ended the Rampage's power-play drought at 6:03 in the third period. The Rampage were 0-27 before Brendl's third Rampage goal in three games since the Phoenix Coyotes acquired him on Dec. 28.
Mike Bishai and Layne Ulmer both extend their point streak with assists to Brendl. Bishai is now on a three-game point streak (1-3) and Ulmer is on a two-game point streak (1-1).
The Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate would cap the night with another power-play goal with less than two minutes left in regulation.
The Rampage (11-24-1-1) will resume play next Friday at the SBC Center hosting the Toronto Marlies at 7:00 p.m.
