Admirals Bounce Back for Split, 6-1

January 7, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release

Norfolk, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals (16-14-2-2) scored twice in each period to avenge Friday's loss with a 6-1 victory over the Lowell Lock Monsters (14-19-1-4) at the Norfolk Scope.

Just one night after handing Norfolk a 9-2 defeat, the Lock Monsters had the tables turned on them early. Two goals in the first frame paced the Admirals to the lead through the first 20 minutes. G Craig Kowalski made his AHL debut for the Lock Monsters, and was welcomed rudely, facing 22 shots in the first. Carl Corazzini and Martin St. Pierre scored for the Admirals.

Norfolk added another tally in the second from Matt Keith before getting on the board. Mike Zigomanis notched his first AHL goal of the season, on the power play, just shy of the midway point of the frame. Much like last night, the rough stuff came during the second period, with three separate fights breaking out involving Danny Richmond, Johnny Boychuk and Cody McLeod from Lowell. Norfolk pushed back in front by three with another goal in the final seconds of the period by James Wisniewski. Kowalski had made 33 saves through the first 40 minutes.

Ajay Baines added a fifth goal for the Admirals early in the third frame and Mark Cullen scored in the final minute of the game on a breakaway to account for the final score. Norfolk added another 16 third period shots to spoil Kowalski's debut, peppering him with 53 in the game - a season-high for shots allowed by the Monsters and seven shy of the team record. The Admirals tallied in the final minute of all three periods on the night, and the Lock Monsters fell to 2-7-0-1 against the East Division.

Monster Memos: LW Frantisek Skladany returned to the Lowell lineup tonight after being reassigned by the Colorado Avalanche. Skladany did not play during his first NHL recall.

The Monsters head to Philadelphia on Sunday for a 5:05 p.m. game. They return home to face the Providence Bruins on Saturday, January 14th. The first 2,500 fans will get a Lock Monsters winter cap, courtesy of TD Banknorth. It's also Locks of Love night, and Fantastic Sam's will be on hand trimming hair and collecting donations for Locks of Love - a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
