Saltdogs on wrong end of tight ballgame

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs dropped a heartbreaker to El Paso Tuesday night, falling 1-0 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln falls to three games under .500 at 16-19, after being shut out for the first time all season.
The loss wasted a gutsy effort by Lincoln starter Ryan Dittfurth (3-3), who allowed just one run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings of work. Dittfurth pitched around five walks while striking out eight, but he gave up a solo home run to Matt Kent in the fourth inning to account for the only run of the night.
For the Diablos, the story was starter Jusef Frias (2-2), who tossed seven scoreless innings in just his second start of the season. Lincoln threatened him three times, including the bottom of the seventh when they put two men on with nobody out, but Frias proved to be up to the task each time. The Saltdogs did put runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Eduardo Rios was forced out at second on a grounder, and Anthony Contreras was caught straying too far from third base on the same play to end the ballgame. Rios and Mario Delgado were the only Saltdogs to manage two hits each in the contest, and El Paso pitching scattered eight Lincoln hits overall.
The Saltdogs and Diablos play game two of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Jarrett Gardner is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln, while Ben Thurmond is expected to take the mound for El Paso.
