St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA (June 17, 2008) - The St. Paul Saints were cruising along, leading 7-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning and then the roof caved in as the Sioux City Explorers scored 10 runs in the inning and the Saints lost 12-8 on Tuesday night at Lewis and Clark Park.

The Saints committed five errors on the night accounting for eight unearned runs and three of the errors came in the 10 run fourth inning. With the Saints up 7-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth the Explorers sent 14 men to the plate and the first out wasn't recorded until the eighth man came to bat. Alex Llanos started the scoring with a two-run homer to left, his third of the season and second in three games. Chris Grossman doubled when Marcel Longmire slipped in right field and couldn't get to the fly ball. Anton French singled him home to make it 7-3. Chad Gabriel moved him to third with a single to right. Nick McCoola then hit a fly ball to left than Brent Krause dropped allowing French to score. Krause then threw the ball towards third that wound up in the dugout and moved the runners to second and third. Derek Schermerhorn made it 7-6 with a two-run single. Tug Gillingham recorded the first out when he sacrificed Schermerhorn to second. Dustin Jones was hit by a pitch and Sam Walker lined out to right for the second out. Llanos singled home Schermerhorn and Jones scored on the play when Longmire's throw to third went off Ben Thomas' glove giving the Explorers an 8-7 lead. Grossman followed with an RBI double and French finished the scoring with an RBI triple. Saints starter Justin Lord was charged with all 10 runs (only four earned) and left the game before French's at bat. The 10 runs in an inning ties an all-time franchise record for most runs given up in an inning and tt was the second time this season the Saints committed five errors in one game.

The Saints tried to come back in the sixth as Jason Colson walked and Krause reached on third baseman Llanos' fielding error. Two batters later Ryan Priddy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Scooter Jordan singled home a run to make it 10-8. He went 2-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Julius Thames, however, finished the inning by grounding into a double play.

The Saints built their 7-0 lead with two in the first on back-to-back RBI doubles in the first by Tim Brown and Longmire.

In the second Thames added an RBI single and Brown grounded one down the third base line for a two-run double to make it 5-0.

The Saints got two more in the fourth on a Thames RBI single and a fielder's choice by Longmire.

The same two teams meet Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Luis Villarreal (3-2, 2.85) to the mound against Explorers LHP Tim Layden (2-3, 4.31). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
