Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA -- Sioux City had never scored more than 8 runs in a game this season but -- after St. Paul built a 7-0 lead -- the X's put 10 runs on the board in the 4th inning led by Alex Llanos 2 run HR to beat the Saints 12-8 Tuesday night at Lewis & Clark Park.
After the Saints put a touchdown on the board, the X's pounded St. Paul starter Justin Lord in the 4th. After a leadoff walk to Sam Walker, Llanos hit an opposite field 2 run HR to put the X's on the board but that was just the beginning. Chris Grossman hit a pop fly to right that Marcel Longmire never saw for a double. Anton French drove in Grossman with a RBI single to make it 7-3. Chad Gabriel followed with a base hit and then Nick McCoola hit a fly ball to left field that Brent Krause simply dropped for an error and then threw it away for a 2nd error that scored French to make it 7-4.
Derek Schermerhorn then blooped in a single to score Gabriel and McCoola and the X's were within 1, 7-6. Tug Gillingham moved Schermerhorn over to 2nd on a bunt and Dustin Jones was hit by a pitch. After Walker flied to right, Llanos would single to right and Longmire would throw it away for an error to score Schermerhorn and Jones and the comeback was complete. Sioux City had a 8-7 lead. Grossman would then rip a RBI double scoring Llanos that would finally kock Lord from the game. In came Dustin Bolton and French lined a triple in the RF corner to score Grossman and the X's led it 10-7.
In the 4th inning, the Explorers sent 14 men to the plate and scored 10 runs on 8 hits. The Saints committed 3 errors, all on the outfielders make just 4 of the runs earned. Sioux City would score 2 more runs in the 6th inning and go on to win 12-8.
Alexander Francisco would only go 2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits and left with tightness in his shoulder. Matt Kretzschmar pitched 2 1/3 innings, walking 1, striking out 3, hitting 2 batters and allowing 3 unearned runs to get the win. Ty Marotz pitched an exceptional 4 2/3 innings for the Explorers, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 7 to pick up his 7th save.
