Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (23-13) swept a doubleheader with the Wichita Wingnuts (20-17) on Tuesday night at the Birdcage. The Birds squeaked out a 2-0 win in game one, and routed Wichita, 10-0, in game two. The wins put the Canaries alone in first place, a game and a half ahead of St. Paul (who lost in Sioux City) and three and a half games ahead of Wichita.

Ryan Ford (4-3) pitched the Canaries to victory in game one of the doubleheader. Ford pitched six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight. Twice the Wingnuts loaded the bases against Ford, but in the games biggest moments Ford was at his best. Ryan struck out all three batters he faced with the bases loaded en route to his fourth victory in his last five starts.

Josh Patton scored both runs for the Canaries in the 2-0 win. In the second inning, Patton walked and advanced to third on a single by Ben Van Iderstine before scoring when Patrick Reilly grounded into a double play. Patton scored again in the fourth. He walked with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Paul Smyth.

Justin Young (3-1) suffered his first defeat of the year in losing the opening game of the doubleheader. Kris Regas picked up his American Association leading 13th save of the season by striking out two batters in a perfect ninth inning.

Game two saw more brilliant pitching from the Canaries. Ben Moore held Wichita off the scoreboard until it was too late to matter, and gave up just two runs on four hits in the complete game effort.

The Canaries started the game two scoring with two home runs in the first inning. Beau Torbert followed Grant Richardson's single with his eighth home run of the season for an early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Ben Van Iderstine hit his third home run of the season. After one inning, the Canaries led 3-0.

The Birds added to their lead with a five-run fifth. The Canaries loaded the bases on a singles by Ryan Grant and Grant Richardson and a walk to Josh Patton. With Patrick Reilly at the plate, a wild pitch scored both Grant and Richardson. Reilly singled to score Patton, and the Birds lead was six, 6-0. Paul Smyth followed with a double to score Reilly, and Smyth scored on a double by Andrew Barbaro. After five innings the Canaries led, 8-0.

Beau Torbert's second home run of game two, and ninth on the season, brought in the Canaries final two runs. After six innings, the Birds led by a score of 10-0.

Wichita's two ninth inning runs were not enough as Moore (3-3) pitched the Canaries to a 10-2 victory to sweep the doubleheader. Leonard Landeros (3-2) took the loss in game two for Wichita.

The Canaries and Wingnuts continue the four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Canaries will celebrate their second annual Native Night presented by Wells Fargo, as the club pays tribute to Native American Heritage.
