Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs survived a scare on Monday, beating Sioux City 7-6 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln improves to 8-8 on the second half of the season.

The Saltdogs took a 7-3 lead into the ninth inning, but Sioux City refused to go quietly. A walk, a single and an error loaded the bases with nobody out. The Explorers plated one run on a groundout and another via the sacrifice fly, prompting Lincoln to bring closer Chris Thompson into the game. James Boone greeted him with an RBI double to cut the Dogs' lead to one, but Thompson retired the final batter on a pop fly to earn his 21st save.

Lincoln took control early in the contest, scoring a run in the first on a Pichi Balet single. The Saltdogs then opened things up with a five-spot in the bottom of the third. Albenis Machado highlighted the inning with a two-run homer, his first of the season. Later in the frame, Shawn McGill hit an RBI double off the center-field fence, and Steve Alexander cracked a two-run double high off the left-field wall for a 6-0 lead. Sioux City cut the lead in half in the fifth on a three-run double by Alex Llanos, but a Deacon Burns sacrifice fly plated what turned out to be an important insurance run for the Saltdogs in the bottom of the sixth.

Lefty Zac Cline (6-2) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings while striking out four. Machado ended the night 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Alexander's two RBI gave him a team-leading 40 on the season.

The two teams play game two of their four-game series Tuesday night at 7:05. Righty Jim Paduch will make the start for the Saltdogs.
