Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-11) let another lead slip away as they lost their third in a row in an 8-3 defeat at the hands of the St. Paul Saints (8-9) on Monday night at Midway Stadium.
The Canaries took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Cory Harris doubled and advanced to third on a single by Patrick Reilly. A single by J.D. Reininger scored Harris, a single by Ken Lup scored Reilly, and Reininger scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Anthonsen. The three consecutive run-scoring at-bats put the Birds ahead by three after an inning and a half.
For the second night in a row, the Canaries starting pitcher failed to hold their lead. The Saints scored single runs off Noel Baca in the second and third innings. In the second, Brent Krause hit his eighth home run of the season to make it 3-1. In the third, Alex Fonseca singled and stole second before scoring on a double by Jason Cooper to cut the Birds lead to one, 3-2.
St. Paul stormed in front in the fifth inning. Singles by Cooper and Krause followed by a walk issued to Josh Alley loaded the bases. Jacob Butler followed with an infield single to score Cooper and tie the game, 3-3. Jeff Eure then hit a groundball that was misplayed by Canaries third baseman Trevor Lawhorn. The error allowed everyone to advance safely, with Krause scoring on the play for a 4-3 Saints lead. A sacrifice fly by Scott Knazek plated Josh Alley for a two-run Saints advantage, 5-3. Steve Butler, Alex Fonseca, and Andrew Schmiesing then added a string of three RBI singles as the Saints opened up an 8-3 lead that would hold up as the final score.
Noel Baca (2-3) gave up eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits to suffer the loss for the Canaries. Reed Dickert (3-4) held the Canaries to three runs on eight hits in six inning for the win. Mike Bille picked up his second save of the season by pitching the final three innings without allowing a run.
The Canaries and Saints continue the four-game series on Tuesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium next Friday, when they host the Wichita Wingnuts at 7:05 p.m. Next Friday's game will feature Post-Game Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
