Saints' sixth-run fifth propels them to victory

ST. PAUL, MN (July 27, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints kept swinging away and it paid off as they put up six runs in the fifth inning and overtook the Sioux Falls Canaries 8-3 on Monday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,083.

With the Saints trailing 3-2 in the fifth Jason Cooper and Brent Krause started with back-to-back singles putting runners at the corners with one out. Josh Alley loaded the bases with a walk and Jacob Butler's infield single to short tied the game at three. Jeff Eure then hit a bouncer to third which Trevor Lawhorn couldn't field cleanly allowing Krause to score and giving the Saints a 4-3 lead. The next four batters would all drive in runs: Scott Knazek's sacrifice fly and three straight RBI singles from Steve Butler, Alex Fonseca and Andrew Schmiesing, capping off the six run fifth.

Saints starter Reed Dickert was tremendous after giving up three early runs in the second. Corey Harris led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Patrick Reilly. J.D. Reininger and Ken Lup followed with RBI singles and Joe Anthonsen added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Dickert settled down after that and tossed 6.0 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out seven to earn his third victory of the season.

The Saints got on the board in the second when Krause blasted a solo shot to center, his eighth of the season, to make it 3-1.

In the third Fonseca singled to center, stole second and scored on Cooper's double. He finished the night 3-5 with a double, RBI and a run scored.

Saints reliever Mike Bille earned a save by tossing 3.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out three.
