Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Just four days after being signed by the Oakland Athletics organization, former Pelicans Kyle Middleton made his first start for the Midland RockHounds, the double-A affiliate of the A's. Middleton was stellar for the Texas League team, pitching seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts, and yielding just three hits. Middleton was on the line for the win, but the San Antonio opponent tied the ballgame and forced extras. Middleton did not factor into the decision that ultimately saw Midland win their fourth extra-inning game in a row to stay a game and a half behind first place Frisco. The Pelicans can relate to such a situation, as they have won their last seven games and yet remain a game and a half behind the Shreveport-Bossier Captains in the American Association South Division.
Meanwhile another former Pelican from this year continues his season in affiliated ball: Jimmy Mojica went 3-4 with a stolen base in his debut with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on June 28. The Seattle Mariners' double-A affiliate bought the rights to Mojica from the Pelicans earlier this season when Mojica was among the league leaders in average and acted as a spark plug at the top of the Pels' lineup. Mojica is currently hitting .185 for the Diamond Jaxx, slamming a home run on July 4 in a game that saw him finish 2-4 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.
Pelicans have even made it to the Bigs, as Edwar Ramirez started this season with the New York Yankees. The 2005 Pelican started the season strong, but lapsed into mediocre numbers that found Ramirez back in the minors. Ramirez is currently acting as a quasi-closer for the triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees of the International League. Ramirez posts a commendable 3.82 ERA, but has a losing record at 1-5. He's finished 12 games this year with three saves.
The Pelicans are currently playing the Wichita Wingnuts in a three-game road series. Pensacola returns home on July 31 to host the Fort Worth Cats. The Woodstock Weekend will be filled with grooviness for all, and all are assured a far-out time. Tie-dying on Friday, fireworks on Saturday, and music from the era will cap off the themed home stand. Tickets are on sale now at Pensacola-area Circle K locations, or online at www.pensacolapelicans.com. Phone orders may be placed by calling (850) 934-8444.
