Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
EL PASO, Texas - Shreveport-Bossier Captains outfielder Jonathan Reynoso has been in and out of the starting lineup in the last two weeks, but he made the most of his starting spot Monday night, bagging a league record-tying four doubles, including a bases-clearing shot to break the game open in the seventh, to give the Captains their fourth straight win in an 11-3 romp over the El Paso Diablos at Cohen Stadium.
Reynoso's doubles were also part of an American Association record-tying nine doubles by the Captains (36-30, 14-4 2nd half), as Bryan Sabatella, Richard Paz, Christopher Garcia, Andres Rodriguez and Kevin Griffin joined Reynoso with two-base hits.
Those doubles backed Jimmy Heard (6-0), who won on the road for the first time in two starts this season. The rookie righthander went seven innings, allowed three runs on six hits, with two walks and a career-high seven strikeouts. Heard did have a rocky start to the game, though. Handed a 1-0 lead after Rodriguez's broken-bat RBI single in the first, Heard gave up a leadoff double to Kennard Bibbs and an RBI single by Arnoldo Ponce just past Heard's glove to tie the game at 1-1. After a strikeout of Jorge Alvarez, El Paso (28-37, 7-10) took the lead when Juan Camacho doubled into right-center.
But that lead was short-lived, as the Captains got four back in the second to take the lead for good. Jose Torres started the inning with a bad-hop single, and Reynoso's first double of the night got him to third. Griffin then hooked his double to right off Bryan Villalona (1-1) to give Shreveport-Bossier the lead back. After a couple of groundouts and a hit-by-pitch, Garcia hit an RBI single to give the Captains a 4-2 advantage before Rodriguez's RBI double to center made it 5-2. Garcia was thrown out at home on that play to end the inning, but it did not come back to hurt the Captains.
Heard then settled down, allowing one hit in the third, a walk in the fourth, and two hits and a run in the sixth. He faced a runner at third with one out in the third, but struck out Jeff Vincent and Mike Provencher to keep the Diablos off the scoreboard in that inning.
The Captains then broke the game open in the seventh, as Garcia hit an RBI double to right-center to chase Villalona, who went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs (six earned), with no walks and two strikeouts. Rodriguez reached on an error against new pitcher Ricardo Rivas, before a flyout and another hit batsman loaded the bases. Up came Reynoso and he crushed a liner to left that Vincent appeared to misjudge slightly, missing it with a leap at the last moment. The ball rolled to the track, and with two outs, all three runners scored to give Shreveport-Bossier a 9-3 advantage.
Paz and Garcia knocked in runs in the eighth to give the Captains the final margin, with Robert Romero and Wednesday's starter Logan Williamson (spelling the tired bullpen on his throw day) throwing the final two shutout frames to seal the win
Reynoso had a chance to break the individual (set by Brett Cooley of Lincoln in 2007) and team records (set by several teams) for doubles in the ninth, but Rivas struck him out, leaving Reynoso to settle for a 4-for-5 night.
Notes: The Captains reached double digits for the third straight game against El Paso, all wins...Shreveport-Bossier has now won three of four against the Diablos after losing the first six contests this year...The Captains stayed 1.5 games ahead of Pensacola in the South Division after the Pelicans won their eighth in a row by beating Wichita 5-4 Monday night...Both of Heard's road starts have been in El Paso...Garcia had three hits for the second game in a row...Angelo Fermin made his Captains debut at shortstop and was flawless in the field, and 0-for-3 with a walk at the plate. Fermin, a switch-hitter, was signed earlier in the day by the Captains.
