Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs reached back into the not-too-distant past on Friday, signing former Saltdogs All-Star Pichi Balet. To make room for Balet on the roster, Lincoln released catcher Lee Rubin.

Balet had been retired from baseball, living and working in Lincoln. He spent all of last season with the St. Paul Saints, and although he missed most of the 2008 first half due to injury, he still hit .306 in 54 games. Arguably, Balet's best seasons in baseball came during his three years with the Saltdogs, as he hit a combined .346 with 28 home runs and 222 RBI between 2005 and 2007. He won the American Association Player of the Year award in 2006, batting .378 with nine home runs and 81 RBI as the Saltdogs won both the first-half and second-half North Division titles. Pichi is a career .339 hitter for his eight-year minor-league career.

Rubin hit .138 in nine games for the Saltdogs with one home run and six RBI. His release leaves Lincoln with two catchers, starter Shawn McGill and backup Andrew Barbaro.
