St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 5, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints found out that home was no kinder to them than their 11 day roadtrip as they lost to the Sioux City Explorers 6-5 on Friday night at Midway Stadium.
The beginning of the game showed sloppy play on both sides, as the Explorers were able to take advantage in the first. Dustin Jones led off the game and was hit by a pitch. Nick McCoola followed with a walk and the two advanced on a double steal. Justin Nelson drove home Jones with an RBI ground out.
The Saints answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Dan Kaczrowski led off with a walk and with one out Todd Self doubled him home. With two outs Brent Krause was hit by a pitch and the two runners advanced on a wild pitch. Daron Roberts drove the two in with a single giving the Saints a 3-1 lead.
The Explorers took the lead for good in the third against a wild Saints starter Adam Cox. Bo Whitaker led off with a walk and with one out McCoola walked. Anthony Webster drove home a run with a double. A wild pitch by Cox scored McCoola tying the game at three. Nelson knocked home his second run of the night with a single to right. After a Lou Palmisano single put runners at first and second, two batters later Brandon Jones drove in the fourth run of the inning with a single to right-center giving the Explorers a 5-3 lead. Cox lasted just 3.2 innings allowing five runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three.
The Saints cut the lead to a run in the fourth when Brent Krause clubbed a solo homer to center, his fourth of the season.
The Explorers answered with a solo homer in the top of the fifth when Nelson went over the right field wall, his third of the season.
Saints reliever Reed Dickert was solid coming out of the bullpen for Cox. He went 4.1 innings allowing one run on one hit while walking two and striking out two.
The same two teams meet Saturday night in the second game of the three game series at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Tanner Scheppers (0-1, 3.86) to the mound against Explorers RHP Ty Marotz (1-3, 5.00). The game can be seen on KSTC-TV, Channel 45 and heard on Relevant Radio 1330. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a golf umbrella.
