Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SIOUX FALLS, S. Dak. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains got a few clutch hits Friday night, but the Sioux Falls Canaries got them later, and the back end of their bullpen completely shut down the Captains, allowing the Canaries to grab a 6-5 win at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Dwayne White hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot off Angelo Morales (1-1) leading off the seventh inning, to give the Captains (8-12) a 5-4 lead. But that lead was short-lived, as Sioux Falls (8-13) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning against Thad Markray (1-3) to take the lead for good. Joe Anthonsen singled to start the frame, and was bunted to second by Tim Hitting. After a walk to Cory Harris, Beau Torbert came to the plate. The Canaries' designated hitter had homered earlier in the game off Markray going the opposite way, so the Captains' starter tried to come in on Torbert, but he got around enough to loop a single to left-center, scoring Anthonsen with the tying run and letting Harris go to third. Reggie Taylor then hit a sacrifice fly to right that was just deep enough to score Harris to give Sioux Falls their final 6-5 margin.

Patrick Lawler and Kris Regas combined to pitch the final two innings, with Lawler allowing just a double with two strikeouts, and Regas getting a four out save with another two whiffs, his sixth save of the year.

An error cost the Captains in the bottom of the first. With one out and no one on, Joe Urtuzuastegui bobbled a grounder from Tim Hutting. With two outs, Beau Torbert was allowed to bat, and the Canaries DH laced a Markray pitch to right-center for a two-run homer. Sioux Falls added another pair of runs in the fourth, with one of those unearned as well, as Patrick Reilly and Fraser Holmes each hit two-out RBI singles to make it 4-0.

After starter Jino Gonzalez, who avoided trouble in the first three innings, left before the fourth with an apparent injury, the Captains began to chip away. In the fifth, Kevin Griffin hit a sacrifice fly off righty Chris Weast to make it 4-1. Shreveport-Bossier then tied it in the sixth, with an error and a walk chasing Weast. Morales came on and gave up an RBI double to Torres to make it 4-2. After B.J. Wheeler struck out, Christopher Garcia was thrown out at home trying to advance on a ball that trickled away from the catcher Holmes. But Rafael Ozuna hit an RBI double to keep the inning going, and Joe Urtuzuastegui picked up his first professional RBI with a bloop double down the rightfield line to tie the game.

But for the second time in six days, the Captains came back from at least four runs down only to lose in the end, dropping their record to 2-5 in one-run games, and ending their second two-game losing streak of the year. It was also another close loss for Markray, who allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits in seven innings. In his three losses, the Captains have lost by four runs combined, and the winning run has scored in the seventh inning twice in a row.

Notes: Garcia had three walks for the Captains...Jonathan Reynoso, Ozuna, and Urtuzuastegui all had multi-hit games... The Captains hit into three double plays, including one off the leg of the pitcher Gonzalez, and had two men thrown out at home. Sioux Falls hit into one double play and had two more men thrown out at second...There were also four passed balls (three by the Canaries) and two wild pitches (both by Sioux Falls), along with three errors (two by the Captains, one by the Canaries).
