Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (8-13) let a 4-0 lead slip away, but rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to get a 6-5 win over the Shreveport-Bossier Captains (7-13) on Friday night at the Birdcage.
The Canaries scored in their first turn at the plate. Tim Hutting reached on an error by Captains third baseman, Joe Urtuzuategui. The error allowed Beau Torbert to come to the plate and hit his fifth home run of the season. The two-run homer gave the Canaries an initial 2-0 lead.
The Birds extended their lead in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. After Reggie Taylor grounded out and J.D. Reininger struck out, Patrick Reilly got things started with a double. Trevor Lawhorn singled to score Reilly for a 3-0 advantage. A passed ball put Lawhorn in scoring position, and an RBI single by Fraser Holmes brought home Lawhorn. The first hit of Holmes' professional career put the Canaries ahead 4-0.
Shreveport-Bossier came back by scoring the next five runs. In the fifth inning, Kevin Griffen hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score B.J. Wheeler and make it a three-run game, 4-1. An inning later, Jose Torres, Rafael Ozuna, and Joe Urtuzuategui all had RBI doubles as the Captains tied the game, 4-4. Shreveport-Bossier went ahead in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Dwayne White. At the stretch, the Canaries trailed by a run, 5-4.
The Canaries regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joe Anthonsen started the inning with a single, and Hutting laid down a sacrifice bunt to get him to second. Cory Harris walked to put two on for Torbert. Torbert singled to advance Harris to third and score Anthonsen, tying the game, 5-5. Taylor then came to the plate and delivered a sacrifice fly to score Harris for the game-winning run in the 6-5 final.
Jino Gonzalez threw three shutout innings before leaving the game as a precautionary measure against a reoccurrence of the triceps injury that caused him to miss his last start. Angelo Morales (1-1) got the win in relief. Kris Regas retired the final four batters, striking out two, and picked up his sixth save of the season. Thad Markray (1-3) gave up six runs, three earned, in suffering the loss for the Captains.
