Big Inning Leads Diablos Past Cats 4-2

El Paso scored three times in the sixth inning en route to a 4-2 win over the Cats in front of 5,124 fans at LaGrave Field Friday night.

The loss narrows the Cats' lead over El Paso in the South Divison to three games as Fort Worth suffered just its second home loss of the year.

The Cats took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Aljay Davis, scoring Cameron Blair. The Diablos tied the game 1-1 in the fifth as an Arnoldo Ponce RBI single brought home Eddy Rodriguez.

Fort Worth once again lead in the fifth inning after Isa Garcia hit a leadoff home run, his second of the year. But in the top of the sixth, Robert Mejia singled with one out before right fielder Tyler Johnson hit a line-drive over the fence in left for a two-run homer and a 3-2 El Paso lead.

The next batter Adam Hale tripled and later came in to score on a wild pitch.

The Cats had scoring chances late in the game, but couldn't come through. They stranded nine base runners total in the game including five over the last four innings.

Josh Neitz (1-0) recorded his first win of the season as he permitted two runs on six hits in six innings of work. Chris Thompson worked a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the year.

Ryan Riddle, who allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings suffered the loss as his 2009 record fell to 1-2.

The Cats and Diablos play again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Lee Gwaltney (3-0) goes for the Cats against his old teammate, Nick Martin (1-1) on the hill for El Paso.
