Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met tonight in the first game of a three-game set in the last series of the regular season. With first place hanging in the balance the two teams met at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

The Salmon Kings came out and immediately began putting shots on Chris Beckford-Tseu, but the Aces goaltender was equal to the task. Just after the halfway point of the period Darryl Lloyd took a breakaway pass, but was immediately hauled down by the Aces Felipe Larranaga. On the ensuing power play Ash Goldie took a Chris St. Jacques pass and put a backhander up and over the glove hand of Beckford-Tseu for the 1-0 Salmon Kings lead. The goal was Goldie's league leading 40th of the season. Less than three minutes later Ash came down on a two-on-one with his brother Wes Goldie. Wes charged down the right side of the ice, and using Ash as a decoy, he snapped the puck past the Aces' goaltender for a 2-0 lead. Alaska would respond before the period expired, Bo Cheesman fired a shot from the right circle. Salmon Kings' netminder Julien Ellis caught a piece of it with his blocker shoulder, but not enough as it went top corner to cut the Kings' lead in half. The period would end 2-1 in favor of Victoria.

The Aces stormed out and tied the game 37 seconds into the period when F.P. Guenette fed Cam Keith who chipped the puck past Ellis. Victoria would retake the lead when Chris St. Jacques flew down the right side and fired a shot past Beckford-Tseu just inside the left post less than two minutes later. On an Aces' power play Alaska's Peter Metcalf had the puck pop up and over his stick when he pinched at the right point. Wes Goldie took advantage, picking up the puck and heading down the right side on a breakaway. Goldie cut to the middle and let the shot fly and it went past Beckford-Tseu for the power play goal and a 4-2 Salmon Kings lead. It was Wes Goldie's 40th of the season to tie his brother Ash at the top of the ECHL goal scoring list. Alaska would get that one back when Matt Shasby kept the puck in at the right point as Victoria tried to leave the zone. Shasby found Brett Hemingway at the right face-off dot. Hemingway let a rocket go past Ellis. The teams would trade opportunities for the remainder of the period, but the goaltenders made the saves to keep the score 4-3 Salmon Kings after 40 minutes.

The Aces tied the game with just over eight minutes remaining when Alaska bunched up on the right side of the ice and F.P. Guenette waited and found defenseman Derick Martin coming down the left side. Martin received the pass and fired it past Ellis. The Aces completed the comeback when Guennette charged down the right side and somehow found daylight between Ellis and the post to stake Alaska to a 5-4 lead. An empty net goal by Keith finished the scoring. Aces 6 Salmon Kings 4.

The Salmon Kings went 1/3=33.3% on the power play while the Aces were 0-3=0%. Victoria out shot Alaska 34-25.

The Salmon Kings and Aces continue their three-game set on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The regular season finale goes Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Puck drop at 7:05. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
