Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL, a proud affiliate of the San Jose Sharks and the Worcester Sharks, have announced that forward Mathieu Melanson has agreed to terms on a standard player's contact. Melanson is expected to be in the line-up when the RoadRunners host the Bakersfield Condors in the regular season home finale at 7:11 p.m. tonight at US Airways Center.
Melanson, 22, was claimed off of waivers from Florida Wednesday.
The Shediac, New Brunswick native is in his first full professional season and currently ranks 12th among ECHL rookies with 28 goals and 58 points in 52 games. Melanson was selected to the American Conference roster that participated at the 2008 Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star Game Jan. 23 in Stockton, Calif. where he tallied a goal and added an assist. He was named the In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week for the second time in his career for the week of Feb. 11-17 after recording four goals, including his second hat-trick of the season, and three assists in three games helping the Everblades go 3-0-0.
Melanson began his pro career with the Stockton Thunder last season and tallied 14 goals and 26 points in 17 regular season games, and three assists in six Kelly Cup Playoff games. He was acquired by the Everblades on Oct. 5, 2007 in exchange for future considerations. Melanson was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the eighth round at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. His father, Roland, captured three consecutive Stanley Cup championships with the New York Islanders from 1981-83 and is currently an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens.
Phoenix plays their regular season home finale at 7:11 p.m. Thursday when they welcome the Bakersfield Condors to US Airways Center.
The RoadRunners are currently one point behind the Stockton Thunder for the eighth and final playoff spot in the National Conference. Phoenix trails Bakersfield by four points for the seventh overall seed.
