Saints Riding Solo (Homers) With Franchise Tying Record Six, Lose 11-8

POMONA, NY - Unfortunately for the St. Paul Saints Wednesday's game began at 10:30 a.m. on the east coast because nearly three hours later their bats finally woke up. The Saints launched six home runs, all solo homers, four coming in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as they lost 11-8 to the Rockland Boulders at Provident Bank Park.

The Saints homers came in bunches as Craig Brazell hit the first of six to lead off the fourth, his second of the season and his first of the game. Two batters later Brandon Tripp hit a solo homer to right, his team leading seventh and second in as many games. The Saints, however, were down 9-3 at that point.

With the Saints trailing 11-4 going into the ninth Jordan Tripp and Dwight Childs led off the inning by going back-to-back, both hitting their second of the season. With one out Dan Kaczrowski launched one into the left field bleachers, his second of the season, that made it 11-7. With two outs Brazell went deep a second time, over the left field wall, his third of the season. That would be as close as the Saints would get as Willie Cabrera grounded out sharply to second to end the game.

It was the third time in the Saints franchise history they homered six times in a game and, coincidentally, the last time they did it, on May 23, 2011 at home against Fort Worth, they lost that game 13-9 in 10 innings. The other game the Saints hit six homers was in Sioux City on May 31, 2009 a game they won 17-3. The four homers in the ninth are the second most in American Association history and most in an inning in Saints franchise history. The Kansas City T-Bones bested the league record of three by hitting five in the third inning on May 20 of this season.

Despite the Saints scoring a run in the first, the Boulders responded with nine unanswered over the first three innings. In the first Donnie Webb led off by being hit by a pitch and he stole second. With one out he moved to third on a single by Jerod Edmondson. Chris Edmondson doubled them both home to make it 2-1. Stephen Cardullo followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1. Billy Alvino's infield single moved Cardullo to third. Alvino then stole second and Childs' throw went into center field allowing Cardullo to score and making it 4-1.

In the second the Boulders sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs on an RBI single by Jerod Edmondson, a fielding error by shortstop Adam Frost allowed another run to score and a sacrifice fly by Cardullo to make it 7-1. Saints starter Luke Anderson lasted just 2.0 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out one.

Reliever George Jensen took over from there and pitched 5.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. eastern. The Saints are TBA and the Boulders will send RHP Marty Popham (0-1, 3.65) to the mound. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
