Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (12-6) defeated the El Paso Diablos (5-12) 8-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.

For a second straight game, the Wingnuts were led by a strong performance from their starting pitcher. Anthony Capra made his first start since the final game of the 2012 regular season and allowed just one earned run on three hits over six innings. Capra walked two and struck out five, including the 500th strikeout of his professional career. Capra threw only 78 pitches in his six innings of work.

Wichita took early control of the game, scoring five unearned runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Jake Kahaulelio reached on an error by Diablos' shortstop Maikol Gonzalez. John Rodriguez followed with a line drive double into the left field corner that scored Kahaulelio from first base with the game's first run. After C.J. Ziegler grounded out, Cole Armstrong singled through the left side to put runners on the corners. Abel Nieves, Tim Rotola, and David Amberson then drew three consecutive walks, the latter two of which forced home runs. Jared McDonald and Ryan Khoury finished the rally with back-to-back RBI, infield singles.

El Paso's lone run came in the top of the fourth on a J.J. Muse sacrifice fly to center field.

With second and third and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Khoury legged out another infield single that scored Nieves from third base. Gonazalez's throw on the same play sailed into foul ground and brought in McDonald from second to make it 7-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rodriguez doubled home Kahaulelio from first base for a second time in the game for the Wingnuts' final run.

Daniel Bennett, Nick Walters, and Tyler White each worked a scoreless inning of relief to finish the game. Wichita drew seven walks in the win. Nieves had three hits, while Amberson reached base three times. All nine starters reached base at least once with a hit or a walk. Kahaulelio and Ziegler had their hitting streaks snapped at nine games.
