Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The bullpen comes through as the Sox defeat the Railcats, 9-8 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. On a cool night in June, the Sox are able to win their second series in a row in a game of three hours and seventeen minutes.

Matt Larkins started on the mound for Amarillo and would give up the first run of the game to Craig Maddox. The single drove in Mike Massaro, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Gary South Shore plated two more runs in the third with hits from Adam Klein and Christian Guerro, who would both score on a Maddox's second run batted in and Steve Liddle's single. The Railcats led 3-0 into the bottom of the third.

Chris Valencia brought the Sox within a run on a two-run homer to right, his first of the season. But in the fourth, Sox starter Larkins would be chased from the game after giving up four consecutive hits including a two-run single by Danny Pulfer. Sox reliever, Ryan Mitchell came in to record all three outs in the fourth, while striking out two. Amarillo scored two in the bottom of the inning when Joe Weik scored on a Trey Ford single, and Brandon Jones scored on a Morgan Coombs' wild pitch. After four, the Sox trailed 6-4.

Coombs, for the Railcats, would pitch five innings, allowing four runs, two earned on six hits while fanning five. Matt Larkins, for the Sox, allowed six earned runs on nine hits with a walk in three innings pitched. The Sox tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with two more runs. Led by Weik's single, Cory Patton's RBI double, and another Ford RBI, the score was tied at 6-6.

Chris Holguin came out of the Sox bullpen in the seventh and allowed two runs, both unearned on a leadoff error committed by Trey Ford and a walk issued to Steve Liddle. The Railcats' eighth run scored on a double play groundout turned up the middle. Again, the Sox tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with RBIs from David Peralta and Weik off Railcats' reliever, Ian Durham. The Sox led off the eighth with KC Serna reaching base and scoring on a full count double down the right field line by Jason Martin.

Cory Patton (S, 1) closed out the ninth after giving up a walk and a double to start the inning. Patton finished the game with two strikeouts pitching, but three strikeouts as a batter. Erik Draxton (W, 1-0) went one and a third, allowing no hits with one strikeout. Draxton came on in the seventh to clean up what Chris Holguin left as Holguin allowed two unearned runs on one hit with two walks. Ryan Mitchell pitched a solid three innings for the Sox, allowing no runs on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Railcats' reliever, Marco Gonzalez (L, 0-2) pitched the eighth and gave up one run on two hits. Kyle Lindquist came on back in the sixth to allow two runs on three hits against the Sox.

With the win, the Sox improve to 8-11, while the Railcats fall to 11-8 on the season. Friday, the Sox travel to Laredo to take on the Lemurs in a three-game series. The game is set to begin at 7:05pm.
