Saints' Pitching Falls Apart Late in 11-3 Loss in Game 2 of Doubleheader

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints set a franchise record on Friday night at Midway Stadium in game two of the doubleheader. It was the sixth doubleheader of the season, surpassing the franchise record of five set in 2000. It will be a game the Saints would like to soon forget as they allowed 11 runs over the final three innings and lost 11-3 to the Grand Prairie AirHogs in front of 6,008, splitting the doubleheader

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Ole Sheldon singled and Jose Hernandez drove a pitch over the left field wall, his fourth of the season, to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.

Saints starter Dylan Thomas didn't allow a run through the first four innings, but in the fifth he struggled with his control. Thomas walked the leadoff batter Yasutsugu Nishimoto. With one out he walked Brandon Pinckney. A single by Ryan Pineda loaded the bases and then Thomas hit Andres Rodriguez to force in a run and make it 2-1. Thomas was lifted from the game for reliever Hugh Adams. After a strikeout of Palmer Karr Jr., Adams got Kenny Held to hit a slow roller to his right. Adams reached down to try and bare hand the ball, but it went off his hand, trickled behind him and Held reached on a single which scored a run to tie the game at two. A walk to Austin Newell forced in a run and gave the AirHogs a 3-2 lead. The final two runs of the inning scored on a single by Charlie Neil to make it 5-2. Thomas was charged with four runs on three hits in 4.1 innings pitched while walking five and striking out five.

Adam Frost tried to jump start the Saints office in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to left, his fifth of the season, to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The AirHogs, however, got a big blow of their own in the sixth. After Pinckney and Ryan Pineda singled, Rodriguez hit a three-run shot to left, his ninth of the season to give the AirHogs an 8-3 lead. Adams went 1.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two.

The same two teams meet Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. in game four of the five game series at Midway Stadium. The Saints will send RHP Mark Hamburger (3-3, 4.58) to the mound against AirHogs RHP Josh Strawn (6-4, 3.71). Many more days until Star Wars Episode 7 it is presented by Parsons Electric.
