St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The American Association media guide states that Gary Elliston owns the Grand Prairie AirHogs. After his last two starts against the AirHogs it turns out Mark Hamburger actually owns them as he tossed his second complete game shutout against the AirHogs in the last nine days, tossing a three-hit gem on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 6,340.
Throwing on three days rest Hamburger threw 134 pitches, 86 for strikes and gave up half as many hits in this complete game shutout than he did on July 11 in Grand Prairie. Only two men reached as far as second base and Hamburger picked one of them off. In the first inning Hamburger gave up a two out single to Ryan Pineda. He got Andres Rodriguez to line out to end the inning.
In the second Austin Newell singled off of Hamburger's glove with two outs and then walked Angel Flores. Hamburger, however, picked off Newell to end the inning.
In the fourth Hamburger plunked Palmer Karr Jr. with two outs and walked Kenny Held. Newell line out to end the inning and no other baserunner would reach second base the rest of the game as the AirHogs managed just one more hit.
That hit came in the sixth when Andres Rodriguez singled with two outs, but Karr Jr. flew out to center to end the inning.
Hamburger touched the low 90s on the radar gun in the ninth inning as he retired the AirHogs in order and set down the final 10 in order. Hamburger walked two and struck out four on the evening.
The offense gave Hamburger all the run support he would need in the first. Adam Frost led off with a double and scored on Joey Becker's double to make it 1-0. With two outs and two on Ole Sheldon singled to left scoring Becker to make it 2-0.
In the sixth Jose Hernandez reached on an infield single. Dwight Childs doubled to right and Hernandez scored on a throwing error by the right fielder to make it 3-0.
The Saints final run came in the eighth when Hernandez reached second on two errors by shortstop Yasutsugu Nishimoto, one fielding and one throwing on the same play. With two outs Frost knocked home Hernandez with a single to center.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the five game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Drew Gay (1-0, 2.00) to the mound while the AirHogs are TBA. The Saints celebrate Margaret Thatcher on National Ice Cream Day. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
