St. Paul Saints News Release
NEWARK, NJ (June 3, 2012) - In the first two games of the series the St. Paul Saints didn't trail against the Newark Bears. On Sunday afternoon they never led as the Bears slugged three home runs and the Saints lost 7-1 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Saints starter Alberto Rolon, who gave up just 10 home runs all of last year gave up three more on Sunday and has now given up six early on in 2012. It started in the second inning when the Bears hit back-to-back home runs in the second with a solo home run by Burt Reynolds, his first of the season, to make it 1-0. Eric McGee followed with a solo blast to left-center, his second of the series, to make it 2-0.
After a 20 minute rain delay the Bears put the game away with a four run fifth inning. Dan Coury led off the inning as he reached on a hit by pitch. With two outs Alex Bardeguez singled and Juan Martinez singled home Coury to make it 3-0. Former Major Leaguer Daryl Ward, who had been 0-10 in the series, got his only hit and made it count, a three-run blast to right, his third of the season, to make it 6-0.
That was more than enough for Bears starter Mike Ness. The Saints didn't get a man into scoring position until the fifth when Ronnie Bourquin and Alex Garabedian started off with back-to-back singles. Adam Frost sacrificed them to second and third, but Jake Krause and Jim Rapoport couldn't drive in a run.
The only mistake Ness made came in the seventh when he shook off his catcher on a 3-2 pitch and delivered a fastball to Bourquin who hit it over the right field wall, a solo shot, his first of the season. Ness went 7.0 innings allowing one run on six hits while walking two and striking out four.
The Saints are now 3-3 on their 10 game road trip and finish up with a four game series against the New Jersey Jackals at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State. The first game of the series is Monday night at 7:05 p.m. eastern, 6:05 p.m. central and the Saints send RHP Robert Coe (2-1, 3.06) to the mound against Jackals LHP Matt Chico (0-2, 16.05). The game can be geard on Club 1220 KLBB.
