Big Fifth Cements Wingnuts Sweep

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita Wingnuts used a five-run, nine-batter fifth inning to turn a one-run lead into an 8-2 score, as they defeated the Grand Prairie AirHogs 9-4 on Sunday to complete a sweep at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, and extended their franchise-record winning streak to 11.

As they had done in the prior two games of the series, the AirHogs (8-8) scored first, with Greg Porter's home run leading off the second and Keanon Simon's RBI single with two outs in that frame making it 2-0.

But the Wingnuts (13-3) got C.J. Ziegler over and in after a leadoff double in the second, and took the lead for good on Juan Richardson's two-run single in the third.

Grand Prairie did not score again in seven innings against Wichita starter Ryan Hinson (3-0), who allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out two.

AirHogs starter Cody White (0-1) was right with Hinson through four innings, but it unraveled for him in the fifth. The lefty hit Mike Conroy with the first pitch of the inning, and Ryan Khoury followed with a single that bounced passed Simon in center to allow Conroy to score. Jake Kahaulelio singled to put runners at the corners, and John Rodriguez brought them in with a three-run homer to right. Richardson then doubled to knock White from the game, and David Peralta's two-out single off Mark Herrera capped off the big frame.

Zane Chavez's two-run double in the eighth off Robert Roth cut the AirHogs' deficit some, but it was too little and too late for Grand Prairie to avoid the sweep.

Notes: Each pitcher had exactly one 1-2-3 inning...The top four hitters in the Wingnuts batting order went 10-for-15 with six runs scored and six driven in...The AirHogs have now alternated sweeping and being swept in four straight series...nine of the 10 AirHogs hitters, including pinch-hitter Kenny Held, had at least one hit, and all 10 got on base safely at least once...The AirHogs had exactly one hit in seven different innings and only had multiple hits in the second, while leaving nine on base...Herrera worked the final four innings, allowing two hits oand one run of his own to save the rest of the Grand Prairie bullpen.
