Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS -- Cory Morales' bloop single gave the Sioux Falls Pheasants a walk-off, 3-2 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Pheasants took three of four games from Lincoln and pulled their record to .500 (8-8) for the first time this season in front of 2,008 fans.
Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning with runners at second and third, Morales dropped a game-winning single in between three Saltdogs fielders in shallow right. Al Quintana scored the winning run easily from third.
Most of the contest was a pitcher's duel. Pheasants starter Mitchell Clegg (1-0) pitched eight strong innings for his second straight quality start. He allowed only two runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking one.
"It's a huge help when I can stay relaxed when I know I have quality fielders backing me up," Clegg said. "Having [Pheasants catcher] Al Quintana behind the plate doing his thing gives me a piece of mind that whatever he calls, he's making the right decision to help me execute."
Lincoln starter Ryan Sheldon countered with six innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out six Pheasants batters.
Lincoln tallied a run in the first inning on Leivi Ventura's RBI single.
The Pheasants regained a 2-1 lead in the second inning when Quintana lashed a two-run shot over the left field wall, his second home run of the year. He brought home Trevor Lawhorn, who doubled one at-bat prior for his 76th two-bagger in a Sioux Falls uniform. He surpassed Felix Pagan as the franchise career leader.
The Saltdogs evened the game in the third on a Stephen Holdren single, bringing in Joe Spiers, and a pitching battle ensued.
Over the next six innings, neither pitcher faced more than five batters in an inning. Pheasants pitching limited Lincoln to just four base hits, including two bunt singles, in the final six innings.
Dan Cooper (1-0) earned the win for the Pheasants, tossing a 1-2-3 10th inning, striking out one along the way. Cody Evans also pitched a perfect ninth.
Brandon Cooney (0-1) took the loss after facing the last five Pheasant batters. In the 10th inning, he allowed Quintana to single, Joe Anthonsen to reach via a walk and the hit to Morales.
"With this team, I know we're going to hit the ball, come through in clutch situations and that's going to be the key to our success," Clegg said.
The Pheasants face the Gary Southshore Railcats to open a three-game series at 7:05 Monday, June 4 at Sioux Falls Stadium. Kids FREE in June continues. Two children 12-and-under are free with every purchase of a regular adult ticket.
Notes: Jonny Kaplan extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the fifth inning. The streak is unofficially at 17 games due to a suspended May 19 game. The team record is a 22-game hitting streak, set by Jermaine Swinton in 2001.....The Pheasants are 2-0 in extra innings....The Pheasants are 3-0 on Sunday afternoon games...The last time the Pheasants were at .500 or better was May 13, 2011 (1-1).
