American Association Game Recaps

June 3, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release

Sioux Falls 3, Lincoln 2

A bloop single by SS Cory Morales won the game for the Pheasants in the bottom of the tenth, as C Al Quintana crossed the plate. Quintana had singled to lead off the inning to start the rally. He had a part in every Sioux Falls run, as he hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Quintana finished the day 2-for-4. After the home run, Lincoln tied the game at 2-2 in the third. Both sides were held scoreless after that until extra innings. Sioux Falls LHP Mitchell Clegg and Lincoln RHP Ryan Sheldon overcame the early runs to shut down their opponents the rest of the way. Ultimately, Sioux Falls RHP Dan Cooper was credited with the win in relief.

Wichita 9, Grand Prairie 4

A five-run fifth inning assured a win for the Wichita Wingnuts over the Grand Prairie AirHogs, 9-4. The Wingnuts took their first lead of the game in the third inning on a two-run single by 3B Juam Richardson. Then, with a two-run lead in the fifth inning, DH John Rodriguez connected for a three-run home run to expand the lead. LHP Ryan Hinson held strong through seven innings to get the win. He allowed two runs on eight hits.

Winnipeg 6, Gary SouthShore 5

A three-run rally by Gary SouthShore in the ninth made for a dicey ending in Winnipeg, but the Goldeyes held on for the win, 6-5. The RailCats trailed 6-2 heading into the ninth, but cut the lead to one. After cutting down the deficit, Gary SouthShore had the bases loaded with two outs and had a chance to pull off a late comeback. With the pressure on, RHP Nick Carr struck out Craig Maddox and secured the win for Winnipeg. Carr had been called on to get out of a jam in the eighth and worked out of his own trouble in the ninth to earn the save in 1.1 innings. The Goldeyes deciding runs came in the eighth inning, when RF Josh Mazzola and LF Ridge Carpenter hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Those runs helped RHP Andrew E. Walker pick up his second win of the season.

Newark 7, St. Paul 1

The Newark Bears used the long ball to top St. Paul, 7-1. Newark struck first in the second inning with back-to-back home runs by DH Burt Reynolds and RF Eric McGee. In the fifth inning, 1B Daryle Ward expended the lead with a three-run home run. SS Alex Bardeguez was the Bears' most consistent hitter, leading the team with a 3-for-4 performance. On the mound, RHP Mike Ness earned his second win of the season. Ness went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits.

Kansas City 2, Amarillo 1 (10 innings)

The Kansas City T-Bones walked off in extra innings on the Amarillo Sox 2-1. Kansas City RF Ray Sadler opened up the bottom of the tenth with a single and made it to third when DH Kala Kaaihue singled in the next at bat. 1B Trevor Coleman picked up the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field. The T-Bones struck first in the game when CF Greg Milner led off the bottom of the first with a homerun. Amarillo responded in the fourth when LF Adam Buschini also hit a solo homer, his fourth of the year. P Jacob Wiley picked up the win for his 1.1 innings of relief but P Josh Rainwater was also impressive as he gave up just five hits and one run in 8.0 innings.

Fargo-Moorhead 8, Sioux City 4

Fargo-Moorhead RedHawk CF Nic Jackson paved the way for the RedHawks to beat the Sioux City Explorers 8-4 with three RBI. Jackson was 3-for-5 on the night including an RBI single in the seventh and an RBI double in the top of the ninth to give Fargo-Moorhead some needed insurance. The Explorers tried to put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth as SS Ryan Priddy blasted a two-run homerun but that was as close as Sioux City would get. RedHawk SS Zach Penprase had a nice day at the plate going 2-for-3 with three runs and a pair of walks. Penprase also stole three bases. P Aaron Shafer earned the win for his strong seven innings of work. He allowed six hits and two runs but neither were earned while striking out seven batters.

Laredo 7, El Paso 6

The Laredo Lemurs jumped out to an early lead and held on tight for a 7-6 win over the El Paso Diablos. Laredo put up a four-spot in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Laredo LF John Allen came up with a big two-out double in the second to bring home a pair of runs. Allen finished the day 3-for-4 with a walk and half of the team's four RBI. For the Diablos, eight of the ten players who had an at bat in the ball game registered exactly one hit. El Paso RF Brian Joynt hit his first homerun of the season with a two-run shot in the sixth. Trailing by two runs in the top of the ninth, the Diablos made a charge as 3B Jonathan Cisneros doubled home CF Kory Drew but the rally ended as DH Nelson Teilon flew out to center to end the game. P Robert Romero picked up the win for one inning of relief.
