St. Paul Saints News Release

COLUMBUS, OH - A one out fifth inning single to left field by Jimmy Kerrigan kept the St. Paul Saints from making the wrong kind of history on Thursday night at Huntington Park. That single was the lone hit for the Saints and one of just three base runners. Andrew Albers was strong over 6.0 innings, but without any run support the Saints lost 3-0 to the Columbus Clippers.

Ben Krauth got the spot start for the Clippers after Logan Anderson was scratched a couple hours before first pitch. The first of the three runners the Saints got aboard came on a leadoff walk to Sherman Johnson to start the game. Willians Astudillo grounded into a double play and Mark Contreras grounded out to end the inning. Krauth went 3.0 no-hit innings while walking one and striking out two.

For the third consecutive game the Saints gave up a run in the first inning. With Andres Gimenez at second and two outs, Major League rehabber Franmil Reyes roped an RBI double to right-center scoring Gimenez and giving the Clippers a 1-0 lead.

With one out in the fourth, Astudillo reached on a two base throwing error by the shortstop Gimenez and then took third on a wild pitch. With the infield back, Mark Contreras hit a ground ball to the only place on the infield that couldn't score Astudillo, to third. Astudillo broke for the plate and got into a run down before being tagged out.

The Clippers, who scored six of their seven runs with two outs on Wednesday night, scored all three of their runs with two outs on Thursday. After Albers struck out the first two hitters in the fourth, Daniel Johnson hit a solo homer to right, his eighth of the season to make it 2-0. Owen Miller walked and Nolan Jones followed with an RBI double to right-center putting the Clippers up by three. Albers went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five.

With one out in the fifth, Kerrigan lined a clean single into left to break up the no-hitter, the last base runner the Saints got on the night. The Clippers relievers retired the final 14 Saints hitters.

The Saints bullpen was once again strong as Nick Vincent tossed a perfect eighth and Robinson Leyer a perfect ninth. Saints relievers have now gone 14.1 consecutive scoreless innings.

The same two teams meet in game four of the six-game series on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. central. The Saints send LHP Charlie Barnes (3-1, 3.10) to the mound against Clippers RHP Heath Filmyer (1-1, 9.00). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
