Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
DES MOINES, IA. -- Right fielder Anderson Miller crushed a grand slam over the left-center field fence as part of a five-run third inning to help propel Omaha to an 8-6 win over Iowa on Thursday at Principal Park in a rain-shortened game.
The game entered a rain delay just before the beginning of the bottom of the seventh and was later ruled final.
Omaha (31-13) scored single runs in each of the first two innings before breaking the game open with the five-run third against Iowa (15-27) right-hander Mike Hauschild (Loss, 0-1). With the bases loaded and two outs, second baseman Gabriel Cancel hit a ground ball to third that Tyler Ladendorf failed to field, resulting in a run-scoring error. The next batter, Miller, smacked the Chasers' first grand slam of the season to put Omaha in front, 7-0.
The Chasers scored six pitches into the game. Centerfielder Edward Olivares led off with a first-pitch double down the left field line and scored on a single by first basemen Emmanuel Rivera. Omaha added another run in the second inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from shortstop Angelo Castellano.
Omaha's final run of the game came in the fourth, when Olivares blasted a solo home run over the left field fence, his eighth of the season and second in as many days. It was Omaha's 22nd game this season with at least two home runs, and the Storm Chasers lead all of Minor League Baseball with 89 home runs in 44 games.
The I-Cubs fought back in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on five hits against right-hander Eddie Butler and left-hander Gabe Speier (Win, 2-0). Butler allowed the first four batters to reach on three singles and a walk, resulting in the first two runs of the inning. After Speier entered, he gave up two more runs on an RBI groundout and an RBI infield single to Dee Strange-Gordon.
Speier allowed two more runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by Trent Giambrone.
Right-hander Domingo Tapia (Save, 1) threw a perfect inning in the sixth and took the mound for the seventh just before the game was delayed due to rain and ultimately called.
The Storm Chasers continue their series with the I-Cubs on Friday, when left-hander Marcelo Martinez (0-1, 36.00) faces Iowa RHP Cory Abbott (1-3, 6.03). First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. and coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. on 1180 The Zone.
Following a two-week road trip to Iowa and St. Paul, the Omaha Storm Chasers return to Werner Park on Tuesday, July 6, to begin a six-game series against the Toledo Mun Hens that features special FNBO Summer Fireworks Series shows on July 8 and July 10 and an Adalberto Mondesi bobblehead giveaway on July 9.
