Akron RubberDucks News Release
Trenton's Eric Ruth tossed 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, and Danny Oh tripled and singled, as the Thunder opened a three-game series with a 3-1 victory over the Akron RubberDucks at Arm and Hammer Park.
Turning Point
Oh tripled to lead off the fifth against Akron starter Mike Clevinger (8-8). After a two-out walk to Francisco Arcia, Trenton's Cito Culver hit a sinking line drive to right that handcuffed Jordan Smith and skipped all the way to the fence. Both Oh and Arcia scored to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. It was ruled a single and RBI for Culver, and an error on Smith, his first miscue of the season in 113 games.
Mound Presence
Ruth (8-4) and Clevinger were both masterful. Clevinger went seven innings and scattered five hits and allowed just the two runs on the Culver single, only one of which was earned. He walked one and struck out six, and ranks second in the league with 131 strikeouts. Ruth, who has pitched at three levels in the Yankees system this season, mostly at Trenton, made his first career start against Akron, and fanned seven. He left with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning, but lefty Matt Tracy came out of the bullpen and retired Jeremy Lucas on a fly ball to left to strand all three on base.
Duck Tales
Yandy Diaz drove in the only run of the game for the RubberDucks (66-62) with an RBI single off Tracy in the seventh to make it 2-1. Diaz was 2-5, and is hitting .307. Bryson Myles had a pair of hits and a stolen base. Smith also had a pair of hits, including a bunt single in the fifth. Ronny Rodriguez led off the ninth inning with a pinch-hit single
Notes
Oh drove in an insurance run for Trenton in the eighth, extending the Thunder lead to 3-1...The RubberDucks put the first two on in the ninth and had them on second and third with one out, but closer Cesar Vargas induced a grounder to third for an out at home, and then got Bradley Zimmer on a grounder to second to end the game and earn his fourth save...It was the sixth straight loss for the RubberDucks...Reading trounced Altoona, 11-4, Monday, so the Ducks remain two games out of the EL West wild card spot with 14 games to play ...Time of game: 2:35 ...Attendance: 3,545.
