Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Fightin Phils (73-54) showed off the bats on Monday night against the Altoona Curve (68-60) as they won 11-5 and registered 17 hits in the process. Every Fightin had at least one hit. The win ties the 1995 Reading Phillies win total.
Nick Williams wasted no time getting the Fightin Phils on the board as he hit a lead-off home run off Curve starter Matt Benedict in the top of the first inning that gave Reading a 1-0 lead. It was the first lead-off home run by a Fightin since JP Crawford hit one on June 26th against Akron. It was the first lead-off home run on the road by a Fightin Phil since Tyson Gillies hit a home run on the first pitch of the game against the Rock Cats on June 28th of 2013 in New Britain.
Altoona struck right back in the bottom of the first inning as Nick Pivetta gave up a three-run home run to Jose Osuna that gave the Curve a 3-1 lead. Reading came right back in the top of the third inning as they scored five runs off Benedict. They would take a 6-3 lead. Crawford tied the game on a two-run triple then Andrew Knapp gave Reading the lead with a RBI groundout. Destin Hood hit a RBI single that was followed by a RBI double from Art Charles.
Knapp added a second RBI groundout in the top of the fourth inning off Benedict that scored Williams and gave Reading a 7-3 lead. Altoona got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning off Pivetta as Erich Weiss scored on a RBI groundout from Jacob Stallings.
Benedict gave up a double to Williams and a single to Crawford in the top of the sixth inning. He would leave the game for reliever Brett McKinney. Andrew Knapp hit a three-run home run off McKinney that would give Reading a 10-4 lead. Art Charles added a RBI groundout that extended Reading's lead to 11-4.
Nick Pivetta (2-3) earned his second win for Reading as he allowed four runs (three earned) in seven innings. The Fightin Phils tied a season-high with seven hits in the top of the third inning. Hoby Milner finished out the game for Reading as he pitched two innings in relief. He gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Matt Benedict (5-6) took the loss.
