Royals Notes:
v The Royals' went 1-2-1 during the preceding week, bringing the team's record to 15-6-2=32, which places the team in second place in the North Division of the American Conference and translates into a .696 win percentage-which is tied for the third best overall win percentage in the league.
v On Tuesday, the Royals lost to the Wheeling Nailers (5-2) at the Sovereign Center. Reading also lost at home in overtime to Fresno (7-6) on Saturday and in regulation (3-2) on Sunday.
- The Royals are currently in the throes of a four game winless streak at home (0-3-1).
- After having won the first seven games at the Sovereign Center, the Royals have gone 2-4-1 at home since December 2.
v On Friday, the Royals defeated the Nailers 5-2 at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia. That game marked the third consecutive win on the road for the Royals, which is a season high for the team.
- The next seven games for the Royals are on the road, including a five game western swing which takes the Royals to Stockton, California (for 3 games in a row against the Stockton Thunder), Long Beach, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
- The Royals do not return to the Sovereign Center until Tuesday, January 10, when they face the Wheeling Nailers (7:00 pm).
v In Tuesday's 5-2 loss to Wheeling, the Nailers scored the game's first two goals. Also, in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Fresno Falcons, the opponent scored the game's first three goals.
- Over the course of the entire season, the Royals have given up the game's first two goals only three times-the other being the 3-0 shutout loss to the Trenton Titans on November 9.
- In fact, over the course of the season, these are the only three games all year long that the Royals have trailed at any point in the game by two or more goals-and, concurrently, the Royals are yet to come back from a two goal deficit to win in any game this season.
- The opponents have scored the first goal of the game in eleven of the Royals' twenty-three games; and the Royals have come back and won five of those games (5-6-0).
- Reading is 10-0-2 when scoring the game's first goal.
v The Royals' first goal last Tuesday night was scored by Dany Roussin at the 2:51 mark of the second period to make the score 2-1, Wheeling.
- Roussin also scored the Royals' fourth goal in the Royals 5-2 win over Wheeling on Friday. (That goal came at the 10:48 mark of the second period to make the score 4-1, Reading).
- Roussin also assisted on the Royals' sixth goal (by Mike Kompon) in the 7-6 overtime loss to Fresno on Saturday night, extending his personal point streak with the Royals to six games (4g -2a = 6pts) and, thus, giving him a point in every game that he had played with Reading to that point.
- Roussin did not register a point in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Fresno, marking the first game that he has played for Reading that he did not pick up at least a point.
v Greg Hogeboom picked up the primary assist on Dany Roussin's goal (Reading's first) in the Royals 5-2 loss to Wheeling on Tuesday.
- Hogeboom's assist in Tuesday's game extended his personal point streak to twelve games (8g - 14a = 22 pts), the longest point streak in the ECHL this season.
- On Thursday, December 15, Hogeboom was recalled to the Manchester Monarchs, marking his second trip to the AHL this season. Thus, Hogeboom did not play in the Royals' games on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
- In his prior stint with the Monarchs, Hogeboom played one game and was returned to the Royals. Hogeboom has appeared in two games for Manchester so far on this most recent recall, playing to a (+1) in the two wins for the Monarchs.
- Hogeboom is currently the second leading scorer for the Royals with 9 goals and 18 assists for 27 points (in 19 games), which places him tied for thirteenth in the overall scoring race and the fourth leading scorer amongst first year pros in the league.
v The Royals' second goal last Tuesday was scored by Doug Christiansen and made the score 3-2, Wheeling, at the 13:17 mark of the second period.
- That was Christiansen's second goal in as many games for the Royals. (He had also scored in Reading's 5-4 loss on Sunday, December 11).
- Christiansen also picked up an assist in the Royals' 5-2 win in Wheeling on Friday (on the Royals second goal-by Grant Jacobsen), extending his personal point streak to 3 games (2g - 1a = 3pts).
- Christiansen and Jeff State were both loaned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League after Friday's game; and both of them missed the Royals games on Saturday and Sunday.
- This marked the first call up of the season for Christiansen, who had played three AHL games in his pro career prior to this season.
- Christiansen played two games with the Sound Tigers this past weekend, picking up five penalty minutes in a fight in his first game against the Hartford Wolf Pack.
- For State, this marked his second call up of the season-both to Bridgeport, where he played three games and picked up an assist and twelve penalty minutes in his prior stint. During this trip to the AHL, State played two games and registered two penalty minutes.
v Mike Pandolfo was held off the score sheet in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to Wheeling, ending a personal 10 game point streak, during which he had 7 goals and 7 assists for 14 points.
v The 5-2 loss to Wheeling on Friday snapped a season high personal seven game win streak for Royals' goaltender, Cody Rudkowsky, dating back to a 5-2 win over the Dayton Bombers on November 12. This was also the first loss that Rudkowsky had suffered in eight starts at the Sovereign Center this season.
- Rudkowsky was also the goaltender for Reading in the 7-6 overtime loss to the Fresno Falcons on Saturday night.
- Rudkowsky's record is now 10-2-1. His 10 wins rank him tied for fifth amongst goaltenders in the league; his 2.46 goals against average is eighth in the league; and he has a save percentage of .918.
v The five goals scored against the Royals by the Nailers on Tuesday night marked the second game in a row-but only the third time this season-that Reading's defense had given up five or more goals in a single game.
- The Royals' defense held the Nailers to just two goals in Friday's 5-2 win in Wheeling; but on Saturday night, the Fresno Falcons scored a season high seven goals against the Reading defense.
- Going into last Tuesday night's game, the Royals had a team goals against average of 2.58, which ranked the team third in the league in that category. By the end of this week, the team gaa had dropped to 2.87 (66 goals in 23 games), which is ranked fifth in the league.
v In Tuesday's loss, the Royals' penalty killing unit held the Nailers scoreless in two tries with the man advantage. This was the fewest power play opportunities that the Royals have given up in any single game this season; and also marked the eighth time this season that Reading's penalty killers kept the opponent off the board.
- The Royals penalty killing unit gave up one goal in eight tries to Wheeling in Reading's 5-2 win over the Nailers on Friday.
- In the 7-6 overtime loss to the Fresno Falcons on Saturday night, three of the Falcons seven goals came on the power play (in 10 chances with the man advantage), tying the season high for power play goals against for the Royals' penalty killing unit, which going into that game had been the top ranked pk in the league. (The Long Beach Ice Dogs are the only other team to score three power play goals on the Royals in a single game-a feat they accomplished in the 5-4 win over Reading on Sunday, December 11.)
- The Fresno Falcons also scored two power play goals against the Royals in Sunday's 3-2 win over Reading. This marked the sixth time this season that Reading has given up two or more power play goals in a single game.
- Overall, the Royals have allowed 23 power play goals in 145 chances against, an 84.1% kill ratio, which is tied for the eighth best kill ratio in the league.
v The two goal performance for the Royals last Tuesday night marked the first time since the team was shut out on November 9-a span of 13 games-that Reading was held to two goals or less.
- The Royals' offense scored five goals on Friday (in the 5-2 win in Wheeling) and six goals on Saturday (in the 7-6 overtime loss to Fresno); but was held to two goals again on Sunday (3-2 loss to Fresno).
- Over the course of the 23 team's games this season, the Royals have scored a total of 94 goals, an average of 4.09 goals per game-which ranks the team third in the league in that category.
v The Royals' 5-2 win in Wheeling on Friday night marked the first time this season that Reading had defeated the Nailers in three tries. With that win, the Royals now have at least one win against all of their opponents in the North Division. Reading has a record of 12-4-1 against teams in the North Division.
v Three of the Royals' five goals scored in Friday's 5-2 win over Wheeling were scored while the Royals were on the power play (in six chances with the man advantage).
- The three power play goals scored by the Royals tied a season high for ppg in a single game-a feat that the team has accomplished a total of three times this year.
- Reading also scored two power play goals in Saturday's 7-6 overtime loss to the Fresno Falcons, marking the eleventh time this season that Reading has scored two or more power play goals in a single game.
- Including Sunday's 3-2 loss to Fresno (when the Royals power play unit went 1-8), Reading has now scored at least one power play goal in 16 consecutive games, dating back to the 3-0 shutout loss to Trenton on November 9.
- Over the course of the season, Reading has scored 34 power play goals in 132 chances with the man advantage, a 25.8% scoring ratio, which ranks the team second in the league in that category.
v The Royals offense was held to just 20 shots on goal in Friday's 5-2 win on Tuesday, which tied a season low for the team. In fact, Reading had only three shots on goal in the third period, establishing a new team low for a single period this year.
- When combined with the fact that the Royals scored six goals on their first fifteen shots in Saturday's 7-6 overtime loss to the Fresno Falcons, the Royals offense went through a stretch of just over 90 minutes of hockey during which they scored eleven goals on 35 shots-a 31.4% shooting percentage.
v In Friday's 5-2 win, Reading's first two goals were scored by Grant Jacobsen, marking his first multi-goal performance as a pro. Both of these goals were scored in the first period, 3:27 apart (8:21 and 11:48), and gave the Royals a 2-0 lead.
- Jacobsen also picked up an assist on the Royals' fifth goal (by T.J. Kemp at the 18:00 minute mark of the second period to make the score 5-1), marking Jacobsen's third three point performance of the season for Reading.
- Jacobsen also scored the Royals' second goal to make the score 2-0 at the 7:30 mark in the first period in the Reading's 7-6 overtime loss to Fresno on Saturday night.
v T.J. Kemp also scored two goals for the Royals in the 5-2 on Friday night in Wheeling, including the game winner (Reading's third goal) while the Royals were on the power play at the 12:33 mark of the first period to make the score 3-0.
- This marked the second two goal performance of the season for Kemp, who scored two goals in Reading's 5-4 loss to Long Beach on Sunday, December 11.
- Friday's game marked the seventh multi-point game of the season for Kemp.
- Kemp has now scored seven goals and added seventeen assists to give him twenty-four points, which ranks tied for second in scoring amongst defensemen in the ECHL and sixth amongst rookies in that category.
v Malcolm MacMillan had two assists in Friday's 5-2 win in Wheeling, marking his second two assist performance of the season.
v The Royals goaltender in Friday's game was Barry Brust, who stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced that night, marking his second consecutive win on the road.
- Brust currently has a record of 3-3-0, and each of his three losses have come at the Sovereign Center (in four starts).
- Brust currently has a goals against average of 3.00 and a save percentage of .906.
v Chris Bala scored two goals in the Royals' 7-6 overtime loss to the Fresno Falcons on Saturday night. (The first was the game's first goal at the 3:36 mark of the first period; and the second was Royals' fourth goal 1:22 into the second period.)
- For Bala, that was his first multi-goal (and multi-point) performance of the season in eight games for the Royals.
- Bala also scored a short-handed goal (his second in just 8 games with Reading this year) in the Royals' 3-2 loss to Fresno on Sunday. (That goal came with just 4:39 left to play in the game and made the score 3-2 Fresno, giving the Royals a chance at the comeback that was not to be.)
v Reagan Rome scored the Royals' third goal, while the Royals were on the power play at the 15:52 mark of the first period to make the score 3-1, Reading.
- This goal gave Rome three on the season for Reading-all of which have come while the team was on the power play. (In fact, nine of Rome's ten points this year have come while the team has been playing with the man advantage.)
- Rome also assisted on the Royals' first goal (by Chris Bala) on Saturday night, marking his fourth multi-point performance of the year with Reading.
v John Francisco scored the fifth goal for the Royals (to make the score 5-2) at the 8:01 mark of the second period.
- Francisco also assisted on the Royals' first goal (by Chris Bala), marking his sixth multi-point performance of the season for Reading.
- In Tuesday's 5-2 loss to Wheeling, Francisco was held off the score sheet, snapping a personal nine game point streak, during which he had six goals and seven assists for thirteen points.
v Mike Kompon scored the Royals' sixth goal on Saturday night, which made the score 6-2 at the 10:40 mark of the second period.
- Kompon also had one assist in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to Wheeling; two assists in Friday's 5-2 win in Wheeling; and an assist in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Fresno-all of which extends his personal point streak to ten games during which he has scored two goals and added fourteen assists for 16 points.
- Saturday's game did, however, snap an eight game assist streak for Kompon (13a), which is the longest assist streak in the league this year.
- Over the course of the season, Kompon has now had ten multi-point performances for the Royals.
- Kompon has had at least one point in 19 of the 23 games he has played for the Royals this year.
- Kompon is the leading scorer for the Royals with 8 goals and 22 assists for 30 points.
- Kompon's 30 points places him tied for sixth in the overall scoring race in the ECHL.
v Saturday's 7-6 overtime loss to the Fresno Falcons marked the second time in less than a week-and the third time this season-that the Royals held a lead going into the third period and failed to win. (Reading led 4-3 going into last Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Long Beach Ice Dogs; and, on October 28, the Royals led 4-2 over the Wheeling Nailers going into the third period and ended up losing in a shootout, 6-5.)
- Saturday's game also marked the fourth time this season that the Royals have given up three goals in the third period. (The Royals still won two of those games-on November 5 to the Dayton Bombers and on December 3 to the Toledo Storm-and the other one was the 6-5 shootout loss to Wheeling.)
- The third period is the only period in which the opponent is outscoring the Royals this year. Reading is a (+12) in the first period; a (+18) in the second period; but a (-6) in the third.
v Saturday's game marked the first time this season that Reading has lost in overtime, as the Royals now have a 2-1 record in overtime this year. All three of the Royals' overtime games have been played at the Sovereign Center.
v In the games played by the Royals on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Royals' lineup had fewer players than is permitted under the rules due to call-ups and injuries. On Friday and Saturday, the line-up was reduced to 14 skaters (out of an allowable 16) and in Sunday's game, the playable roster was effectively reduced to just 12 skaters.
