San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - Tyler Weiman has been named a runner-up for ECHL Reebok Goalie of the Week honors, the ECHL announced Tuesday. Weiman helped the Gulls to a 2-1-0 record last week, while only allowing five goals on 90 shots.

The Colorado Avalanche prospect began the week Monday, Dec. 12 stopping 26 of 27 shots in San Diego's 2-1 overtime win in Utah. Weiman then turned in a 36-save performance Saturday, as the Gulls pounded Bakersfield 8-1. The only blemish of the week was a loss to Long Beach Friday, in which the second-year netminder blocked 23 of 26 shots.

For the week, Weiman was 2-1-0 with a 1.65 goals-against average and .944 save percentage. The 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder from Lloydminster, Alberta is now 5-8-2 overall with a 3.10 GAA and .894 save percentage. After getting off to a 1-6-1 start, Weiman is 4-2-1 since.

The Colorado Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate, originally assigned Weiman to the Gulls in early October. He spent portions of training camp with both Colorado and the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters.

The 21-year-old goaltender spent last season (his rookie year) with the Central Hockey League's Colorado Eagles, posting a 33-6-5 record with a 1.80 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. He led the CHL in wins, GAA, save percentage and shutouts (eight), while being named the league's Outstanding Goaltender and Rookie of the Year. Weiman was Colorado's fifth round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
