Victoria Royals News Release
Red Deer, AB - The Victoria Royals are proud to announce the selection of Victoria, BC native and defenceman Jason Spizawka with the team's first selection, 19th overall, in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.
The product of the Victoria Racquet Club Minor Hockey Association spent the 2018-19 season with the Yale Hockey Academy Bantam Prep team of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). Spizawka played in 28 games for Yale where he earned 25 points (2g-23a) to go with 26 penalty minutes. His 23 assists were tied for the second most on his team.
"We are excited to have Jason join our organization," President & General Manager Cameron Hope said. "He is a very good skater who has vision and thinks the game well. He has puck handling skills and makes good execution with his passes. It is an added bonus that he is from Victoria."
This season, the 5-11, 160 lb defender was named the CSSHL's Bantam Prep Division Scholastic Player of the Year.
The WHL Bantam Draft is an annual event in which the clubs of the Western Hockey League select players who have graduated from bantam. For the 2019 draft, players born in 2004 are eligible. The Draft order is determined by way of points in the regular season, which excludes teams that missed the WHL Playoffs. Those organizations are placed into a draft lottery for the first round only. Apart from the lottery results in the first round, teams will select in order of fewest to most regular season points.
During the Bantam Draft, players from Western Canada and the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming are eligible to be selected.
