Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals rallied for two runs in the seventh inning Wednesday for a 2-1 victory over Tacoma. A crowd of 2,902 fans watched the Royals complete a four-game sweep of the Rainiers who - prior to this series - had won 14 consecutive contests in Omaha dating back to April 2002.
The Royals tied the game at 1-1 on Jarrod Dyson's broken bat looper up the middle for his third hit of the game, scoring Jordan Parraz. David Lough followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left to score Cody Clark, who had doubled, with the deciding run.
Edgar Osuna gave Omaha a quality start, allowing just one unearned run on three hits over 6.0 innings. Another young lefty, 20-year old Tim Collins (1-0) picked up his first Triple-A win by pitching a scoreless seventh inning. He gave up a walk and a double to put runners at second and third with one out, but worked out of it by retiring Matt Mangini on a chopper to second and Justin Smoak on a hot shot grounder to third.
Victor Marte allowed an infield single and a walk with two outs in the eighth, but escaped by striking out Eliezer Alfonzo. Josh Rupe pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch his ninth save of the year and his second in as many games. Tacoma starter Andy Baldwin (7-7) was the tough-luck loser, yielding two runs on eight hits over 7.0 innings.
Omaha (65-54) won its fifth straight. The Royals, who completed a 7-1 home stand, have won eight of their last nine and 12 of their past 15 games. Tacoma (61-57) lost for the eighth straight time and dropped the 13th out of their last 15 contests. The Rainiers have also lost eleven consecutive road tilts.
The Royals' win, combined with Iowa's 5-4 loss to Portland, pulled Omaha within 2.5 games of the first place Cubs in the PCL American North division. The Royals have gained 3.0 games on Iowa in the past three days.
After a league-wide off day on Thursday, Omaha opens an eight-game road trip to California Friday at 9:05 p.m. with the first of a four-game series at Sacramento. Royals right-hander Luis Mendoza (7-8, 4.79) faces River Cats righty Clayton Mortensen (11-5, 3.89). You can catch all the action on Omaha's KOIL AM-1180 or online at www.oroyals.com .
The Royals will open their last ever homestand at Rosenblatt Stadium - a 13-gamer - on Saturday, August 21 with a 7:05 p.m. game vs. the Memphis Redbirds. That stand includes four meetings with the Redbirds, who were tied with Omaha for second place entering today's action, as well as a five-game series vs. Iowa.
