Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox picked up their second straight walk-off win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Tuesday night at Security Service Field in front of 7,307 fans.

The Sky Sox star of the night was clearly starter Jhoulys Chacin. Chacin tossed seven shutout innings giving up just three hits and two walks while striking out six. Both batters that walked were immediately erased on double-play groundouts as Chacin recorded 20 of his 21 outs via a strikeout or groundout. The only out recorded on a fly ball was on the first batter of the game when Craig Gentry hit a soft liner back to Chacin that the righty easily handled. In his two career starts against the RedHawks, Chacin has tossed 12.1 scoreless innings which include his seven innings tonight and 5.1 innings on 8/19/09 when the Sky Sox twirled their fourth franchise no-hitter.

The Sky sox struck first in the third inning with an unearned run. With one out, Kaz Matsui singled and one out later came around to score on a throwing error by third baseman Esteban German to put the Springs up 1-0.

In the fourth, the Sox struck for five runs on four hits and three walks. After Brad Eldred started the inning by striking out, seven straight Sox hitters reached base. Jay Payton doubled and Cole Garner walked before Chris Nelson singled home Payton to make it 2-0. Michael McKenry then walked to load the bases and Matsui drew a walk to force home the Sox third run. Eric Young Jr. then hit the ball through the right side and hustled the hit into a two-run double. Jonathan Herrera singled home the final run of the inning to cap of the scoring and put the Sox ahead 6-0.

Oklahoma City would mount a massive rally in the eighth as soon as Chacin exited the game. Lefty Scott Rice started the inning for the Sox and proceeded to walk the first two batters he faced before giving up a two-run double to catcher Kevin Richardson to make the score 6-2. Andrew Johnston replaced Rice but didn't fair any better. He gave up a single to put runners on first and third then struck out German to get the first out of the inning. He then gave up an RBI single to Matt Brown, walked Chris Davis to load the bases and then gave up another RBI single to Brandon Boggs to finish his night and cut the Sox lead to 6-4. Franklin Morales then came on to try and squelch the rally and got Hernan Iribarren to pop out to short for the second out but then gave up a two-run single to Ryan Garko to tie the game up a six all. Morales walked Gregorio Petit to load the bases once again but struck out Richardson to finally end the inning. In the frame, the RedHawks sent 12 men to the plate on five hits and four walks.

Despite allowing the RedHawks back in the game, the Sky Sox would find a way to pick up the victory. In the bottom of the ninth, Herrera walked with one out against Oklahoma City closer Pedro Strop. Strop then struck out Matt Miller before getting Eldred to hit a grounder to third that looked to be the final out of the inning but German threw the ball high to first and Eldred beat out the throw for the third baseman's second error of the game. That would bring Payton to the plate and after working the count full he stroked a single to center to plate Herrera and give the Sox their second walk-off win in as many nights.

The late inning heroics gave Morales (3-0) the victory after working 1.2 innings of relief and the loss to Strop (1-2).

The series finale is set for tomorrow night at 7:05 PM (MDT) with the Sox looking for the series win. RH Chaz Roe (7-11, 5.69) will take the mound for the Sox against RH Guillermo Moscoso (7-5, 5.46).
