The Portland Beavers defeated the Iowa Cubs for the third time in-a-row, 5-4, Monday afternoon at Principal Park.

Portland's Cedric Hunter and Sean Kazmar both went 2-for-5 including lead off back-to-back singles. Wily Mo Pena doubled in the duo for an early 2-0 Beavers lead.

Marquez Smith spoiled the shutout in the eighth inning with a two-run homer to left field. It was his eight home run of the season. Iowa mustered a ninth-inning rally as Brad Snyder and Bryan LaHair collected lead-off walks. Ty Wright singled, driving home Snyder, making it a 5-3 game. Smith then drove in LaHair to come within one run with a single to center filed as the ball was lost in the sun.

Iowa notched their first hit in the third inning, a single from starting pitcher Jay Jackson. Jackson (9-7, 4.27) got the loss, but turned in a quality start, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings of work. The Cubs were out-hit 9-5. Prior to the eighth inning, Iowa's only other hit came in the fifth. Chris Robinson singled after Bobby Scales reached on a Portland error.

In the fifth inning, Portland extended their lead 3-0. Kazmar reached on an error and stole second to get in scoring position. Mike Baxter then doubled home the run. The Beavers did more damage in the seventh inning when Jeff Gray came in to relieve Jackson. Hunter tripled and scored on Kazmar's double. Kazmar was plated when Aaron Cunningham singled giving the Beavers a 5-0 advantage.

Portland's Cesar Ramos (4-5, 3.53) earned the win throwing seven shutout innings of two-hit ball.

The Cubs travel to Fresno and Sacramento before returning home August 21.
