Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
TODAY: The Royals and Round Rock Express wrap up their 4-game series at the Dell Diamond outside of Austin, Texas. Omaha leads the series 2-1. Air-time is 2:05 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: Aaron Guiel belted a leadoff home run in the 9th inning, giving the Royals a 4-3 victory in front of 10,452 fans. The Express had tied the game in the bottom of the 8th, scoring two unearned runs with the help of a throwing error by shortstop Andres Blanco, the 4th error of the night for Omaha. Then Guiel smashed a 420-foot homer off lefty Mike Gallo (0-1) to again put the Royals in front. Shawn Sonnier (1-0), who was charged with a blown save in the 8th, got the win. Byron Embry earned his 2nd save in the 9th, striking out Brooks Conrad and Mike Coolbaugh with the tying run on 2nd.
ROYALS REPORT: Chris George turned in a solid start in his season debut last night, tossing four-and-a-third scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and a walk and did not strike out a batter in an outing abbreviated due to pitch count. *** Seven of Omaha's eight hits last night went for extra bases, including Blanco's first professional home run. Blanco's leadoff home run in the 6th inning, which gave the Royals a 2-0 lead, was his first in 1,180 at-bats in his 5th season as a pro. Blanco has hit in all three of Omaha's games so far this season. *** Royals DH Chad Santos is tied with Blanco for the team lead in batting after three games, as each have gone 3-for-9 (.333) at the plate. Santos stroked a pair of doubles and scored a run in last night's win. The left-handed hitter is 0-3 against southpaws, but 3-for-6 facing right-handers. *** Kyle Snyder, who gave up the two unearned runs in the 8th inning last night, also gave up an earned run in the 7th. It is the only earned run off a Royals reliever in 10.0 innings this season, giving the bullpen a 0.90 ERA. *** The four errors committed by Omaha last night matched the season high from a year ago, which last happened on July 2nd in a 13-6 loss vs. Iowa.
STARTERS: RH Danny Tamayo (NR) vs. LH Carlos Hernandez (NR) Tamayo makes his Triple-A debut to open his 5th professional season. The 25-year old right-hander was named by Kansas City as the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2004. Tamayo spent most of 2004 with Wichita, going 12-7 with a 3.92 ERA in 25 starts. He allowed only 36 walks, striking out 123 batters, in 142.1 innings. Tamayo also made three starts for Wilmington, going 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA. Tamayo was selected by KC in the 10th round of the 2001 draft out of Notre Dame.
