Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jack Cust had a home run and three RBIs and the Sacramento River Cats broke a tie game with a seven-run sixth inning en route to a 10-6 victory over the Portland Beavers Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.

Each Sacramento batter had at least one hit, with Bobby Smith's three hits leading the way.

Ben Risinger was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Beavers (1-3), who suffered their first regular-season series loss since July 1-3, 2004, and their first at Raley Field since the 2002 season. Kerry Robinson was 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored, giving him seven runs over the last two games.

With the game knotted at 3-3, the River Cats (3-1) sent 12 batters to the plate against three different Portland pitchers in the sixth. Cust led off with a solo home run against reliever Brandon Emanuel and capped the scoring with a two-run double. Jermaine Clark, Freddie Bynum and Smith contributed with consecutive RBI singles against reliever Joe Dawley, and Jon Knott's error in left field directly led to another run.

Robinson drew a one-out walk in the first, and Risinger and Knott hit back-to-back RBI doubles to give Portland an early 2-0 lead.

Portland starter Steve Sparks, making his first Triple-A appearance since the 1999 season, was thrifty through four innings before the River Cats took their first lead in the fifth.

Matt Watson walked to lead off the frame, with Steve Jackson driving in a run with a double to left-center and Clark and Dan Johnson adding RBI singles for a 3-2 lead.

Sparks went 4.2 innings in his debut with Portland, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks.

Britt Reames got the win for the River Cats with 3.0 innings of relief, while Emanuel suffered the loss.

Knott tied the game at 3-3 with a sac fly that scored Robinson in the top of the sixth.

Risinger's two-run single to left in the seventh helped cut the deficit, and Portland tacked on another run in the ninth with an RBI single by Robinson.

After the game, Portland departed by bus for Fresno where they will begin a four-game series on Monday.

The Beavers make their 2005 home debut on Friday, April 15, at PGE Park. Tickets are available at the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (503) 224-4400.
