Portland Beavers News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Bobby Scales went 4-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored, and the Portland Beavers broke through with their first win of the season by defeating the Sacramento River Cats 10-2 at Raley Field Saturday night.

Ben Risinger homered and had three RBIs, while J.J. Furmaniak tallied his third multi-hit game of the year with three singles. Kerry Robinson scored three runs and stole three bases for the Beavers, who snapped a five-game losing streak against the River Cats, dating back to the 2004 Pacific Conference Championship Series between the two clubs.

The Beavers (1-2) got out to a quick lead with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, pushing their lead to 5-0 on Scales' solo homer in the fourth.

Ben Johnson, who was 0-for-7 to start the year, gave the Beavers their first lead of the season with his first Triple-A hit—an RBI single up the middle to score Robinson. Michel Hernandez drew the first of his two (and Portland's three) bases-loaded walks to give the Beavers and starter Marty McLeary a 2-0 lead.

Risinger leveled a two-run home run off starter Dan Meyer to double Portland's lead with two outs in the top of the second.

McLeary breezed through four innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, as the River Cats loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Dan Johnson cut into the Beavers' lead with a two-run double, chasing McLeary after 4.1 innings.

Portland responded in the sixth, though, when Jon Knott drew a bases-loaded walk against reliever Billy Sylvester.

Hernandez drew yet another free pass with the bases loaded for an additional run in the eighth. Risinger, who reached base five times, added a run-scoring single in the ninth, and Josh Barfield capped the scoring with a two-run single.

Brian Falkenborg (1-0), making his first appearance with Portland, was credited with the win after working 1.2 innings in relief of McLeary. Four Portland pitchers combined to limit the River Cats to just five hits.

Meyer (0-1) took the loss.

The season-opening series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

The Beavers make their 2005 home debut on Friday, April 15, at PGE Park. Tickets are available at the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (503) 224-4400.
