January 17, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, the Office of the Mayor of the City of Reading, the Reading Fire Department, and the Reading Police Department today jointly announced the details for "Battle of the Badges III" presented by the U.S. Army. The community celebration, which will kick off with a brand new charity brunch on Sunday, February 10, will include the third annual hockey showdown between the Reading Fire and Police Departments on Sunday, February 17, at 1:45 pm. The ECHL hockey action takes over after that as the Royals join battle against the Gwinnett Gladiators with the opening face-off scheduled for 5:05 pm. One ticket gains entry into both games, and a portion of every ticket sold will go to the Battle of the Badges Scholarship Fund established to benefit the children of firefighters and police officers.
This season for the first time ever, the participants in the Battle of the Badges hockey celebration will join the Royals' team at the 'training table' on Sunday, February 10, at 11:00 am when the Royals will host the Battle of the Badges Charity Brunch at Toscani Wood Fire Grill (1101 Rocky Road, Reading, PA; 610-678-4060). The public is invited to attend the charity event, which will feature a full breakfast/lunch buffet with the Royals and both hockey teams. The cost for the brunch is $25 ($10 for kids 12 and under), with net proceeds benefiting the Battle of the Badges Scholarship Fund. Space is limited for the charity brunch and reservations, which are required, can be confirmed by contacting the Royals General Manager, Gordon Kaye (610-898-7825) no later than February 4, 2008.
For the third consecutive year, the hockey double-header on February 17, will kick off with the Battle of the Badges hockey game which will pit the respective hockey teams from the Reading Fire Department, sponsored by FirstStates Financial Services, and the Reading Police Department, sponsored by Medalist Performance Apparel. The two teams are playing for the honor to hoist the FirstStates Cup. The Reading Eagle returns as the Official Media Partner of the event, which has proven to be a rather spirited affair in the first two rounds.
Gordon Kaye, the general manager of the Royals, stated "the Battle of the Badges has clearly become one our marquee events that we do as an organization all season long. It probably has something to do with the quality-and intensity-of the hockey rivalry between the Fire and Police Departments. It's also proven to be a pretty effective way to get our fans revved up for the Royals' game that afternoon. Our team seems to ride the wave of excitement and energy that the Battle of the Badges game brings to our building. As always, I want to wish both teams the best of luck in the game - but, of course, the most important winners in this event are the families of our community's Police Officers and Firefighters."
To purchase tickets to the Battle of the Badges III presented by the U.S. Army, call the Royals offices at (610) 898-PUCK or visit the Royals website, www.royalshockey.com for more information.
