Salmon Kings Slip Past Condors
January 17, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
The Victoria Salmon Kings faced off against the Bakersfield Condors for the finale of a two-game set tonight at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The first game saw the Kings play an uncharacteristic home game coming out on the short end of a 5-1 score.
The Kings knocked the first goal in at 6:05 of the opening frame, courtesy of Jordan Krestanovich, and the assist went to Nathan Barrett. The Kings went up 2-0 when this time it was Barrett taking the pass from Jordan Krestanovich and putting the puck in past Bakersfield goaltender Michel Robinson. The Condors rebounded as they landed their first goal at 13:28, a shorthanded marker by Tim Konsorada. Throughout the first period there was plenty of back-and-forth play. The Kings headed back to the locker room in the lead 2-1.
In the second period, Kevin Estrada put another goal on the board for the Kings when he scored the team's third goal of the night. The Condors scored at 3:25 courtesy of Joe Dustin. Billy Thompson made some excellent saves throughout the second despite chaos around the net. After 40 minutes of play Victoria had 24 shots on goal while Bakersfield had 40. The two teams headed back into the locker rooms with the Kings leading 3-2.
In the third, both teams came out strong, but the Kings struck first with their fourth goal of the night. Wes Goldie notched it at 1:49 on the power play assisted by Estrada and Wes' younger brother Ash. Despite the Kings impressive defensive work, the Condors knocked one in at the midway point bringing the score up to 4-3 Kings. With less than 10 seconds left in the period, the Condors whisked one past Thompson sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime period the Salmon Kings pressured the Condors and came away with the win 5-4 just 29 seconds into the extra session. Ash Goldie made a great move to the net and just missed ending it, but Estrada batted the puck out of the air with his stick for his second goal of the night. The Condors outshot the Salmon Kings 53-33. Victoria went 1/6=16.7% and Bakersfield went 0/4=0%
This was the final of two games against Bakersfield. The Kings play again Friday night at 7:05 against the Fresno Falcons. Call 220-7889.
