Week 16 Recap:
January 24, Portland 4, Manchester 0: Springfield, MA - The Manchester Monarchs and the Springfield Falcons thrilled a near capacity crowd of 6,735 fans before settling for a 3-3 tie at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday night. The draw extended the Monarchs road winless skid to three games. The Falcons increased their home ice unbeaten streak to four games after rebounding from a two-goal third period deficit.
The Falcons Jason Bonsignore collected his ninth goal at 6:50 of the third to make it a one-goal game. Darcy Hordichuk and Erik Westrum assisted. Eric Healey's 17th goal five minutes earlier had staked the Monarchs to a 3-1 lead. Rookie Michael Cammalleri and netminder Cristobal Huet earned assists on the Healey's goal, scored at 1:56. The Falcons completed the comeback late in regulation with an extra attacker as Brian Holzinger avoided a pair of Monarchs attempts to block his shot from the slot with less than a minute to play. Holzinger patiently skated to the left, found an opening, and scored with 40 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. Sheldon Keefe, drafted in the first round (47th overall) by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, took advantage of weak defensive zone coverage to score the game's first goal late in the opening period. Keefe was left with a clear lane to the Monarchs net after both Cammalleri and defenseman Jason Holland failed to cover him out of the corner. Keefe swept into the crease and slipped a backhanded shot past Huet at 17:11. Holzinger and Frank Banham assisted on Keefe's second goal.
Pavel Rosa netted the Monarchs first goal in over four periods, tying the game by placing his team-leading 18th goal into a wide-open net at 4:36 of period two. Moments before goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier had evacuated the Falcons net and sprinted toward the Springfield bench thinking a delayed penalty was about to be charged to the Monarchs. Rosa settled a loose puck near the Monarchs blue line, and then sent a shot toward the unprotected net for his seventh power play goal. Captain Dane Jackson put an end to his personal nine-game goal drought by banging Dan Welch's no-look pass from behind the Falcons net past Pelletier for his fifth goal at 14:46 of the period. Jerred Smithson also assisted on the goal, which gave the Monarchs their first lead.
January 25, Manchester 3, Springfield 3:
Portland, ME - Maxime Ouellet's league-leading seventh shutout propelled the Portland Pirates to a 4-0 North Division win over the Manchester Monarchs at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday night. The loss was the Monarchs first in five games and second straight to the Pirates, who also shutout the Monarchs 4-0 in Portland on November 10. Ouellet backstopped the Pirates to the win, their first in three games, with 35 saves.
The standout goaltender was aided by an excellent penalty-killing effort as the Pirates held the Monarchs and their top-ranked power play unit scoreless on five chances. Including Friday, the Monarchs have converted just three of 36 power play opportunities in their season series with the Pirates, which is now deadlocked through five games at 2-2-1.
The Pirates opened a sizable first period lead by scoring three goals on just 10 shots. Peter Ferraro, who with his twin brother Chris Ferraro was celebrating his 30th birthday, netted two of the three scores while upping his goal total to 12 on the season. His short-handed goal 3:40 into the game put the Pirates on the board, and his power play marker at 13:11 staked the Pirates to a two-goal lead. Jean-Francois Fortin made it 3-0 Pirates with his first goal at 16:29. Meanwhile, Ouellet silenced the aggressive Monarchs attack with 17 first period saves.
The Pirates played an efficient middle period, limiting the Monarchs to a total of six shots. The Monarchs produced their best scoring chance of the period while enjoying the man-advantage as Michael Cammalleri, in his first game back since being assigned by the Los Angeles Kings to the Monarchs on Wednesday, ripped a wrist shot off the right post with 10 minutes to play. Ouellet preserved the shutout, the Pirates 10th overall, by stoning Cammalleri's backhander in the crease with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Ouellet's save produced a Pirates odd-man rush and eventually Chris Ferraro's power play goal, at 16:32.
