Last Week: The Bears began a busy week by dropping a 3-2 decision to Wilkes Barre/Scranton at First Union Arena. Marek Svatos and Brett Clark provided the goals in the setback against the Penguins. On Wednesday, the Bears returned home to face the Pens and skated to a 4-4 tie. Marek Svatos scored two goals, and Charlie Stephens broke a five game pointless streak with a goal in the first period. Friday night saw one of the wildest games in recent Bears history, as HERSHEY trailed the Binghamton Senators 4-1 just over 11 minutes into the first period, and 6-4 nearly halfway through the third period, but the Bears would rally with goals from Bruce Richardson and Mark Freer to tie the Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena 6-6. HERSHEY then ended the week with a hard fought 1-0 loss to the first place Norfolk Admirals at GIANT Center.
Notables: The Bears begin the week with a sizable chunk of its roster in Denver. Eric Bertrand, Brian Willsie, Riku Hahl, and Bryan Muir are all with the Avalanche. Willsie was recalled Thursday morning from the Bears, Muir was recalled early from a conditioning stint on Friday, and Bertrand earned his first recall to the Avalanche on Saturday morning. HERSHEY recalled Bruce Richardson from Louisiana in the East Coast Hockey League on Friday in time for the game at Binghamton, and also recalled Nick Bootland for his second tour of duty with the Bears this season on Saturday. Bootland had been playing in Cincinnati with the East Coast League Cyclones. The Bears are winless in eight games dating back to January 11th. Defenseman Jeff Paul scored his first goal of the season on Friday in the first period against Binghamton. Defenseman Brett Clark had a five game point streak snapped in the 1-0 loss to Norfolk on Saturday. This Wednesday's game will be the final Wednesday home game for the Bears when the Philadelphia Phantoms come to call. The six goals scored against Binghamton on Friday night tied a season high. The Bears also scored six goals in an opening night win at Wilkes Barre/Scranton on October 12th. After Saturday's game with Utah, the Bears will officially be on All-Star Break until Wednesday morning. Phil Sauve will be the starting goaltender for Planet USA, while Charlie Stephens will skate for the Canadian All Stars. The game is Monday night, February 3rd at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.
Colorado Update: With Derek Morris and Joe Sakic out of the lineup, the Avalanche will play just two games this week. Colorado will be in action Tuesday at Nationwide Arena in Columbus against the Blue Jackets, and on Thursday night in New York against the Rangers.
