
Moose Finish Homestand, Then Play in Hamilton Prior to Break

Last week, the Moose started their six-game homestand with a 2-2 record. They beat the Saint John Flames 2-1 on Tues., lost 5-3 to the Flames on Wed., beat the AHL-leading Hamilton Bulldogs 5-3 on Fri. and lost 8-5 to Hamilton on Sat. Manitoba completes the homestand with back-to-back games starting on Tues. against arch-rival the Chicago Wolves. Then, they fly to Hamilton and play a weekend series versus the Bulldogs before the AHL All-Star break. The Moose remain in second spot in the Canadian Division with 46 points.
Last week: Tuesday, Jan. 21 - Hamilton 1 vs. Manitoba 2: The Moose jumped out to a quick first period when defenceman Rene Vydareny scored. Steve Kariya and Nolan Baumgartner assisted on the play. After one, Moose 1-0. In the second, newcomer Chris Herperger notched his first Moose goal on his first shot on net. Justin Kurtz assisted with Kariya picking up his second helper of the night. Heading into the third, the hosts led 2-0. Manitoba was outshot 15-2 in the third period but Alex Auld held the fort and did not allow a goal until the 17:45 mark of the final frame. Auld captured his 12th win of the season and backstopped the team to a 2-1 victory with his 35 save performance. Auld was selected first star with Kariya named second star and Vydareny making it a clean sweep with a third star honour.
Wednesday, Jan. 22 - Saint John 5 vs. Manitoba 3: In the first, the visitors jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Saint John increased their to two with a goal from Mike Martin. At the end of the period, Herbert Vasiljevs batted home his fourth of the campaign. Steve Kariya and Chris Herperger assisted on the play. After one, Saint John led 2-1. In the second, the Flames increased the advantage with a power play tally. The home side rallied back with two unanswered markers. Zenith Komarniski deflected a shot from Brandon Reid. Newcomer Herperger notched his third, and second with the Moose, to tie the score at three heading into the final frame. Brent Kelly scored a breakaway goal for the eventual game-winner and the final score was 5-3 for the Flames.
Friday, Jan. 24 - Hamilton 3 vs. Manitoba 5: Manitoba scored first when newcomer Chris Herperger potted his fourth of the season. Hamilton received an equalizer goal and after one, the score was deadlocked at one. In the second, rookie Jason King pocketed his 14th of the campaign. Jimmy Roy fired home his fourth of the season. Rookie Nathan Smith bagged his third of the season to end the second period scoring. After two, Moose 4-1. In the third, Manitoba continued to score when Zenith Komarniski registered his 13th. Hamilton added two late markers but the Bulldogs went down to defeat for only the eighth time this season by a score of 5-3. Tyler Moss earned his eighth victory of the season. Bryan Helmer was first star (1a, +4 game), Smith was second star (1g, 1a) and Justin Kurtz (2a, +3 game) for third star honours.
Saturday, Jan. 25 - Hamilton 8 vs. Manitoba 5: In the first, Hamilton opened the scoring before the Moose responded with a tally by Pat Kavanagh. In the second, Kavanagh added his second of the night and eighth of the season before Hamilton answered right back. Nolan Baumgartner fired home a power play marker. The Bulldogs scored an equalizer before the period ended. After two, 3-3. In the third, newcomer Chris Herperger notched his fifth of the season. Hamilton tied the score again and went ahead 5-4 before another rally by Manitoba. Brandon Reid had his third point of the night with his 12th. Bulldogs' Jarret Stoll scored the eventual game-winner and Michael Ryder added one for his hat trick and the Bulldogs came away with a 8-5 win. Reid was selected third star for his two point (1g, 1a) performance.
